I have a deer skull i was thinking of doing this with, but there are no real cracks in it, and the brain cavity is completely closed off from other compartments so i was gonna drill holes all over the top so mycellium can grow through, what do you think nexus? Or does the mycelium eat through the bone?  Anyone have any ideas? When I get around to this there will be pics.

I have a Moose skull I thought about doing it to but I decided on the smaller Raccoon skull.

It's been 35 days and the mycelium hasn't done much new. Very little growth and nothing really through the bone. There are spots on the sides of the eye sockets where the mycelium appears to have 'eaten' through but I'm thinking there may have been small holes or fishers in the bone.

I'm starting to consider a 24 hour dunk. I'm thinking maybe the mycelium inside the skull is moisture starved since only the surface of the bone gets any water from the misting. Very little is getting through the cracks.

If you're going to use the deer skull you might want to consider drilling small holes all over it. Then the water will be able to get to the mycelium.

Bone is a very hard and thick casing layer, in this case, so I doubt very much moisture is getting through.

Possibly. I was hoping for the mycelium to spread across the surface a little more. I wonder how much nutes, if any, would be in bone? Especially dried up old bone. :shrug:

I may give it a try if after the 24 hour dunk I'm about to try doesn't work.
