if you dont want to be gay, find a good kixkboxing gym. Kixkboxing will "kick" your ass if its a good school, and its some of the most practical fighting techniques you can learn.

Ok - thanks so much to the posters who chimed in with useful information.

Due to my schedule when i return to work, Yoga will be more practical and have alot of similar benefits in the short term. So i am going to go with that for now...

I will be relocating in the early Spring and will be looking to start up a martial art then. I will be living in a larger city so i should have more options...

Aikido is appealing, but Kicking boxing sounds more practical and no-none-sense.

I will continue to research in the meantime.

it is, it is. try to find a reputable trainer too, one that pushes you and fucks your shit up, the harder they work you and make you feel like shit, the better imo

2nd that.

and try to find an actual team trainer to work under, their competitive views usually tends to make them push much more out of their students, especially if you let them know that you intend on fighting for the team and winning tournaments for them.
almost every major metropolitan area in every state has at least one mma team

it's really hard to know which place is good unless you observe them for a while. i can say though those kung fu places are probably bullshit. you wanna learn kung fu, go to china.

if you really wanna learn how to fight, get some friends and gloves and start fighting.

i would give you personal tips but i'm afraid it might bite me in the ass.

I'd agree for the most part, but if you have no idea what your doing, you essentially just become an MMA fighter  , untrained, no discipline, no technique....
You need to learn proper technique and movement from the beginning, and THEN start sparing when you actually know what the fuck you're doing.

I have no intention of actually fighting aside from sparring in class.

It would just be nice having badass skills just incase.

I drunkenly got my ass handed to me, by a friend with 3 years MMA on halloween.

The discipline of a martial art is whats appealing though...

agreed. the discipline plays a key role in the development of your fighting skills though, so becoming a good fighter and discipline are intimately connected.
trust me if you find a good kickboxing gym and you learn some basic take down defense and grappling, you won't have to take shit from any mma fighter again. MMA stand up fighting is atrocious...

lol i don't agree at all.

how do you think martial arts started in the first place? just use common sense and don't flail your arms about. martial arts is about knowing what's efficient and effective. use trial and error and think about the mechanics of actions. certainly someone can teach you but they could very well teach you something wrong.

what is proper technique and movement?

actually i'll retract that. i do believe schools are helpful and pass down knowledge, but i already have an idea of what martial arts are and will explore my own kind of martial art i guess.
