Resevoir Tek
    #1161384 - 12/22/02 05:12 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I've got some cakes ready to birth tonight but can't dunk them like I normally do due to the fact that the fridge is stuffed full of food for Christmas so I was thinking of trying the resevoir technique..

My question is do I have to bore a whole into the cake then insert the straw or do I just force the straw into the center of the cake?

Whats a fridge got to do with dunking. I never bother cold shocking cakes. Just dunk the cakes in cold water for 12/24 hrs and birth.

Don't put a hole into the cake after its colonised - you would be begging for a contam. Use the straw/ reservoir tek prior to sterilisation.

According to the Shroomery FAQ it says that you should dunk in the fridge

Can anyone else help with this resevoir tek?  :confused:

One would think that drilling a hole in a cake after colonization might be risky, and perhaps it is more of a risk than doing the pre-sterilization reservoir tek. Regardless of this, many people have had great success drilling holes after colonization.

To do the reservoir tek with straws simply drill a hole large enough to fit a straw in (make the hole about one inch deep or so) and put the straws in. Then fill the straws with water.

After night I do croud
And with night will go;
I turn my back to the east,
From whence comforts have increas'd;
For light doth seize my brain
With frantic pain.

what i do is force the straw into the cake, then pull it out, and a little tube of substrate comes out  :grin:along with it.  Then I stick another straw into that hole and fill it up with water.  works great and prolongs fruiting indefinitely

I like the inner reservoir tek like it's described at fanaticus.com/resevoir.htm (JK'sTek). That way, on its birthday, you can easily insert the (short) straw into the cake. The verm in the center will soak up the water much faster and the straw will be easier to push in. Also, just push the (>2" long) straw pieces in a little bit - enough for it to be semi-sturdy - the mycelia will strengthen it a little as it grows. Also, with the inner-reservoir tek, you can simply inject the water into the verm center, eliminating the need for straws, but doing that may introduce contams, so the inner-reservoir-straw technique looks to be the better way.
Personally, I would just case the cakes in aluminum loaf pans (with the clear plastic domes) on their birthday. But hey, I'm still learning. :cool:
