Pink/Purple Wheat straw???
    #1160367 - 12/21/02 03:33 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I was about to cut up some straw for a bulk style case.

I always go through all my straw to get all the alfalfa out as best I can. Kind of anal about it. This time I noticed some kind of GROWTH on the straw that I never noticed before. Normally it is golden; but now, I can see hints of blackish growth @ the elbows of the strains. I know that cant B good. But what I am worried about is the dots of pinkish purple I saw.

I quickley got a strand of it under the microscope and Xamined it. There is some sort of cellular growth on the straw. I will B damned if I can identify it.

Is this shit still good to B pasturized? I have a whole bail, of it.
So do I toss it all or keep and try?
I can not afford to waste substrait.....

I would think it's fine to pasteurize, most growths will die during pasteurization. You could always sterilize, if you need.

I don't know how much straw is in your area (may be more since you live in da city) but around here I can get a bail for 4 bucks, so if it were me, I'd just go get a new bail.

I really have no clue what it could be, but I have an idea that its not good.  Good luck man.

"sterilize"

I would if I could, just to B safe. But the PC is @ my other 1/2's house.
How about an hour and change @ 400F in the oven? Same deal?

I wouldn't go that route, sounds like asking for contams. If you're not short on spawn, you can always just pasteurize, and give it a whir. Worst case, you get no mush. Best case, you save yourself some drama, having to get more straw.

Good luck, let me know how it goes. I would pasteurize for 40 minutes at 165-170.

Meningitis? I highly doubt that.

realistically, do you think that after pasteurization if the mycellium still colonizes the straw there is still a chance of the fruits bearing contamination? I really doubt that. Most organisms have at least some sort of antibiotic within them that will not alllow a competitor to colonize, or if it does, generally the weaker organism will die.

If i'm wrong, let me know.

thanks,
