Boletus Satanas question

I have a question regarding the beautiful Satan's mushroom. Recently I've come to an argument with a friend who claims it has some psychoactive properties. And as far as I know it has none. I've read a lot about it through the years, and never have I seen any evidence of activity, just that it's poisonous. And I have seen it, and smelt it, and wouldn't eat it if it was the best drug out there. But in my country it's commonly believed  among older folks that it causes people to loose their mind (it's actually called the crazy mushroom). But my opinion is that it's just because of the violent vomiting and delirium caused by dehydration. Any opinions to prove me wrong?

An oppinion can not prove anything. It's demonstrable fact you're thinking of.

Incidentally, I'm sure you are right. It's possible some of the toxic effects manifest psychologically, but only if you consider anxiety, confusion or similar potential  symptoms.

Well, some people I know ate some Boletus eastwoodiae a couple of weekends ago and vomited for about six hours. One of them reported feeling slightly trippy for a short time after smoking some weed. Then the vomiting began.

Of course this is eastwoodiae, found in northern california, so I suppose activity could vary between regions. But I wouldn't recommend it.

Some red pored boletes are psychoactive according to this article on xiao ren ren.

Most of them are just toxic though.

And thaks Alan for that very interesting article. So there is a possibility that b. satanas causes some psychoactive effects... It just isn't researched enough, and for a good reason. As I said, wouldn't eat it (especially raw) if it was the best drug on this planet. Anyway fly agarics grow at the approximately the same time of year, so why experiment with those awful smelling toxic things??
