Question about Boletus species! Please respond if.
    #783303 - 07/29/02 04:45 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

..you are familliar with that species.

The story is next.

I live in Croatia, Here Boletus species are very appreciated as a very good edible mushroom. I came to Norway, saw many many edible boletuss. But people here deo not know anything about them!

They are pretty suspicius and some even think they are poisonus.

Now, is this so because in Norway grows some species that is very very simmilar to edible ones, and yet very poisonus?

Or is it because they simply do not eat those shrooms, because they do not know they are very tastefull?

Help me out, cause my parents put in trash 2 kilos of them! And I am now very hungry! I do not want it to happen again, especially if it is not necessary.

Boletus species are eidable,non-eidable ( if I can call them like that ) and poisonous
I live in Bulgaria and I think the kinds of shrooms that grow here are similar to the
ones that grow in Croatia.
The eidable boletus are :

Boletus aereus
B.edulis
B.erythropus
B.impolitus
B.luridus
B.pinophilus
B.regius

There is only one that is not eidable : B.calopus

There are two poisonous : Boletus satanas and Boletus rhodopurpureus, which can be easily distinguished from the other ones with their colors : their spore print is yellowish-red and they both 'look' poisonous. If you bye abook or just see them on the net, youll know how they look and prevent consuming them
The best thing is bye a book,I repeat
Hope this would be helpful

OK, thank you both for helping me out in thus delicate situation.

It seems my parents wasted good boletuses, but never mind, there are tons of them! And nobody hunts them

A fairly safe way to evaluate boletes for edibility is to reject any with any of the following characters:

- Red or orange tubes or tube mouths
- Bruises blue
- Tastes peppery or bitter

If you follow these you will reject a few species which are actually edible, but if you want to find out details you should purchase a good guide and study up on how to accurately ID to species. Note also that some species will pass the above tests and still not be good tasting. This just keeps you from being poisoned.

Happy mushrooming!
