Question about blueing....
    #622315 - 04/29/02 04:49 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Just some easy questions for the mycologists...

How many mushrooms that stain blue are poisonous? Are there any? Which ones are they? Where do they grow?

This would help immensely because then basically all one would have to do is search for mushrooms that stain blue when handled... if that's the case.

I think that looking for mushrooms that stain blue is not a good idea:

- Many Boletus sp. stain blue including Boletus satanas which is slightly poisonous.
- Some Inocybe sp. are deadly poisonous (muscarin) and some stain blue (psilocin). There is no proof that there are Inocybes that contain both of them but you might be the first one to find it!
- Many species stain black and you could mistake it for bluing reaction.
- You would miss mushrooms that are active but don't have very obvious bluing reaction.

Learn more about mushrooms. Good luck!
