hey think I already answered this one... but just a tought... after you get the tek worked out well they say it's better to leave them partially uncovered to allow for maximum germ killing... make sure you cover them after they are cool to keep the exchange at a min. a little tape over each hole works fine...

wait, you're saying that while the jars are being colonized, we should cover the holes in the jar??? I thought we were suppossed to low for air exchange?

It will work either way but I prefer taping the holes until birth, just to make sure no contamination occurs.

You know years and years back there was this big debate on PF jars with covered+tight lids versus uncovered+loose lids. I think all the PFs I did eventually were uncovered+veryloose lid bands. I believe if your pressure cooking is done well you won't have the issue with contams either way.

I reccomend keeping the holes covered (especially if you aren't using a pressure cooker [by the way, sterility is very difficult without one]) until you see some finger-tipped sized growth in your jars at at least two of the innoculation points. Once the spores have germinated they grow mycelium which is pretty resistant to contams on its own, so wait until you see this to uncover your holes (which will help increase growth because of gas exchange). Hope this helps a little.

I was just about to post the same question regarding holes covered/uncovered. The 9er Tek suggests using "American Air" floor register filters to cover the innoculant jars. If that method is used, how are the filters sterilized? Can they handle a pressure cooker sterilization? Are they placed on jars immediately after innoculation? Thanks to those of you who probably hear these same questions over and over . . . this newby needs direction!

Those who tape, and leave the tape on during the later stages of colonisation often find that they come to a point where the growth halts as there is little but Carbon Dioxide in the jars. When they remove the tape, the growth again accelerates. I personally don't keep tape on jars, the filtration of the vermiculite layer should be enough. If you are going to keep tape on, take it off at 50%-70% so that you don't experience any delay in getting what you want.

Ok now to freak you all out. What I've also done is.

1. Very loose band
2. No tapes on the hole
3. Jar upside down and elevated resting on the edges of two books.

Co2 being heavier will fall out and be displaced by ambient air which flows up through the dry layer into contact with the mycelium.

Don't stress it ;-)

Wouldn't the problem then be that you would risk dehydration. I mean, if optimally, jars should be kept at 85? while colonizing, wouldn't condensed liquid followed the C02 downwards and outwards as well?

No, I don't normally have condensation issues. If there were I'd be happy to have it drip out rather than run down the side of the jar because water droplets are good cariers of weed organisms that live up around the jar rim.

tape should not be left on the holes! doing so lets the air stagnate. The main reasons pf jars contam are, the verm layer is to thin, the verm layer is to loose and tilting of jars causes them to let contams in, syringe was contamed, didnt sterlize correctly. The only thing that tape could prevent is contamination by bugs. Those lil fucks can crawl right in there and eat and lay eggs but if you take other measures to keep this from happening, which rarely happens anyways you will be fine. So dont tape them. One more thing, higher co2 levels promotes faster growth of MYCELIUM, so dont worry about tipping the jars upside down. Before you guys are so quick to correct me, reread what i said. Co2 Promotes Faster MYCELIUM Growth but does not incourage fruiting.

Okay, interesting point of view.. regardless of the fact you've grown great cakes I can't say I agree with you.

Clearly cakes need a level of oxygen to grow well or taking the tape off - letting the CO2 escape wouldn't do anything.. but it does, it instantly has an effect on the speed of growth (speeds it up, because CO2 buildup tends to make it halt after a while).. which leads me to believe that CO2 isn't much use for mycellium.. maybe it is, you might be right but I've never heard anyone say that it speeds it up.

Anyway.. no disrespect..
