Re: marijuana is safer than alcohol approach. [Re: danlennon3]

It's not BAD, but there are just so many better ways to form a good argument.

Again I'm no rhetorical genius but the way I would formulate my argument would be to ask why it's illegal. Point out the wrong information (such as no medical benefit). I'd also talk about the more abstract thoughts on personal freedoms depending on my audience. Some people just don't give a fuck about that so it's no good to bring it up to them.

Would I include something about marijuana being safer than alcohol? Depends on who I'm talking to. Probably not though.

well yeah. the former is a pretty decent premise (you cannot OD on thc) for an overall pro-legalization conclusion when compared to the latter.

I have in the past made that "alocohol is worse" argument and it never seems to get much legs.

Why is that relevant?  Aspirin is legal in spite of killing thousands every year.

I mean sure, it's all well and good that marijuana is physically benign... but I don't see that as having any relevance to whether it ought to be legal

but arent the arguments that favor of its current illegal status based mostly on half-truths and
flat out lies re: its physical and mental malignancy?

Refuting arguments against marijuana being legal isn't the same as arguing that marijuana should be legal.  Arguing against poorly-informed or poorly-formulated arguments against legalization does nothing in itself to demonstrate why cannabis should be legal.

But again, I wouldn't be surprised if such arguments are what win converts in the end... they just aren't decent arguments on their own merits.

and I agree that one of the best, most logical arguments for its legalization is affording me the freedom to put into my body what I chose.

but all the logic of personal freedom flies out the window when subjects like street drug use and gun ownership are debated.
there is too much emotion involved, it seems, and countering fiction w/ fact looks like the more obvious way to try and win an argument.

that's what i was thinking.

When I use philosophical arguments, such as- Why should the government arrest me for my choice to use a relatively harmless substance in the privacy of my own home when I am an independent thinking/responsible adult that causes harm to no one?    people don't seem to listen

and on top of that- current marijuana policy can interfere with getting a job (drug tests), lose custody of your kids, have your property seized, and best of all- many adults are going to have a harder time getting marijuana than kids in high school and still have to deal with shady dealers and support the black market.  assuming you are not growing your own which just puts you more at risk

there never was personal freedom.
the governments foot is always aiming for your balls.
drug fact, is only opinion really.
scientist are paid to figure out things, but the government decides what gets out and whats in the dark not to mention the media making it's own claims.
so what we think is "fact" could be a straight out lie.
this is why drugs and effects on the body and mind from drugs are always sketchy, people believe what they want.

This is exactly how I feel. It really gets me down when I think about it. Weed really is my medicine. It gives me a great time everyday to really see things through a positive mindset and no matter what is getting me down it feels me with a lot of hope. I love weed. I love how it feels, how it makes me think and how much its improved my day to day life. I don't know why they hate us so much

er, op, you typo'd later in your post and said "alcohol is safer"

however i think a lot of good points are brought up in this thread. however where is the argument that its also safer than tobacco? after all, marijuana is generally smoked and tobacco meets the criteria for a "schedule 1 drug" by that definition (it is 100% recreational)

anti marijuana folks constantly say that the medical marijuana thing is simply a ruse, a loophole, or what not for marijuana legalization or at least make it so that people who smoke pot can do so legally without making it a full law, so to speak.

these are not reasonable or rational people on this subject because they simply think whatevers legal should be legal, and whatever illegal is illegal for a reason.

the argument at that point could be simply to say that the largest percent of people view this as something they should be able to buy if those other things are accessible. then WHY NOT pot? whether its "safer" or "bad" either way you have to say that those other items have their, say, issues, then if pot is at least no worse, then why is it illegal? because decades ago we decided so?

now, especially with this site, and just the general consensus is that this is somewhat true, and my friend and his girlfriend basically went to a clinic that doesnt charge you unless they make a recommendation. (to put it bluntly they want to get said money, and they are fighting the good fight to allow people to use it)

the feds fight to keep mj a schedule 1 substance, because they are losing ground. we have whats called over the counter medication, if weed where a recreational drug like tobacco that is simply legal to buy for any reason, then people would invariably use it for what ails them. this flies in the face of our broken crooked corrupt healthcare system which wants you to go to a doctor and pay a copay and fuck around with insurance to get the simplest of things, most things prescribed are  not even remotely recreational, then why in the hell cant i buy erythromycin over the counter for acne if thats what the doctor is going to do anyway?

i have absolutely no problem with medical marijuana being used as an act of subterfuge, to further our efforts, so long as they dont do things that could damage the issue by violating laws and more or less giving people an opportunity to say "see, thats why we dont do that"

on that note, i firmly believe it has medical benefit, and articles have described people, for example one lady saying "i hate marijuana" (meaning she doesnt really like pot "but it is the only thing that works"

prior to prohibition cannabis f was used in that manner, and for thousands of years.

however we dont even allow pain doctors to do their job in prescribing opiates and they always fear the DEA will come after them for simply doing whats right. plenty of people are in more pain than they should be.

i think if a doctor believes that something will help their patient they should be allowed to do that  its irrational to entrust doctors to do their jobs and say that they are experts, and then have non doctors tell them how and when to do things.

Did you ever have a bottle of vodka, not the western supermarket stuff with little taste but real Russian vodka?

Did you enjoy it without vomitting?

among other alcoholic stuff during my life, I had the same, however, even really heavily intoxinated by alcohol, there was no "high", no "answer", no "higher state of consciousness".

I played some kind of PC game for hours, while drunk. then towards the end of the evening, the alcohol "high" faded into some kind of hangover: clouded mind, drowsyness, etc.

Why I do not like alcohol is because when you drink too much, 6, 7 beers or more, plus heavy alcohol, you get nausea, can't walk anymore, and must endure the delirious state of mind from others.

Alcohol is just boring, yes it is a drug, but not a very interesting one.

IT CAN CAUSE ADDICTION. IT CAN DESTROY PERSONALITY. MOST DRUNKARDS UTTER LOW-LIFE STUFF, IF ANYTHING. IT KILLS MANY PEOPLE DUE TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS.

so, yes, I think I know the epxerience of heavy alcohol consume.

What about these ladies and gentlemen, who utter all this "marihuana is causing mental health problems"?

Did they ever try marihuana, and can speak of their own experience?

Do they mix it with information about all kinds of other drugs, without the information is being asked for? Often, they do.

I know alcohol, including nausea, vomitting, beer, whiskey, vodka and the devil. Tell me why should I use it? It's enourmous expensive, and after all, I just feel sick. Sometimes I enjoy going to a hotel bar, and drink two maximum three beers. But that's nothing, I'd rather like to visit a coffeeshop, and roll a joint.

You should express doubts about all this culture that surrounds alcohol- it is spread everywhere, for instance all hotels (or at least many of the expensive one's) have reception, bar, restaurant etc., where people consume alcohol on daily basis, expensive drinks, and what ever.
