marijuana is safer than alcohol approach.
    #11437567 -

I read the book- Marijuana is Safer and the authors basically say that the marijuana is safer than alcohol argument is what will win people over in the long term.  they have some proof of this with their Alcohol is Safer campaigns in Colorado and some other places.

One thing I agree strongly with the book on, is that the current laws in addition to the media and the corporate world (billions of  $ spent on alcohol advertising every year)  influence most American's to drink alcohol when it is imo clearly worse than Marijuana. 50% of crime in America is committed under the influence of alcohol and probably a majority of the car crashes too

Do you think the alcohol is safer argument is the best way to prove that marijuana should be legal?  if not, what do you think is the best approach?  other than not giving a fuck.

well to sum up the problem, i jokingly called someone an alcoholic earlier and they said "it's better than being a drug addict."

I honestly do not know what the best approach is man

I just know that something needs to be done

I think the individual liberty argument should win people over.  I think the absurdity of the concept of a victimless crime should win people over (if the perpetrator is nominally the only person being harmed by the commision of the crime, shouldn't it be up to them to press charges?)

But it would not surprise me if the "safer than alcohol" argument convinces the most people in spite of being one of the weakest actual arguments.

That's a good approach, but it all really just comes down to personal choice.  My body, my choice.

Absolutely not.

Pointing fingers is pretty childish. I'm no rhetorical genius but I think this is considered a fallacy as well? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You should be able to come up with a good case for why something should be legal on its own. No need to say "Well alllccoohhooool is legal!" Makes you sound like a whiny little brother.

Also the main thing I get from "Weed is safer than alcohol" is "Then fuck, let's make alcohol illegal." If that hadn't already failed miserably I think more people would use that as their counter as logically it makes just as much sense.

Exactly jewunit, as far as arguments go it's weak and full of holes.  But people are often swayed more by that sort of argument that by a more logically sound one.

Ha, that approach does sound kind of whiny, now that I think of it.

Yeah, it's the two wrongs make a right fallacy. In terms of logic, the argument makes absolutely no sense. The only argument that could be made from saying weed is safer than alcohol is that the law regarding weed/alcohol is inconsistent which would lead to either: A. legalizing weed or B. making alcohol illegal.

i always thought "no one has died from direct use of marijuana" was a affective one.

i could think up hundreds of reasons why marijuana is better and safer than alcohol but now what we need is people who will listen.

one of drugs meaning is "medicine" so i am proud to call marijuana a drug, but first thing that comes to the mind of the average American is drug= illicit substance, negative affects to the body and addiction.
i blame the media personally.

the media has caused a lot of mixed information about marijuana and it's cause the whole world to be confused.

it's so mixed up that some people don't even think booze is a drug.

it's total chaos and it's causing legalization of marijuana to be painful and slow.

Why is that relevant?  Aspirin is legal in spite of killing thousands every year.

I mean sure, it's all well and good that marijuana is physically benign... but I don't see that as having any relevance to whether it ought to be legal

Marijuana being safe becomes important when people try and refute your original arguments with "Well... well... well it's BAD FOR YOU!"

Then you say "Lulz you are dumb."

but arent the arguments that favor of its current illegal status based mostly on half-truths and
flat out lies re: its physical and mental malignancy?

There's a difference between pointing out the general misunderstanding of marijuana's effects on health and saying it's safer than alcohol.

Refuting arguments against marijuana being legal isn't the same as arguing that marijuana should be legal.  Arguing against poorly-informed or poorly-formulated arguments against legalization does nothing in itself to demonstrate why cannabis should be legal.

But again, I wouldn't be surprised if such arguments are what win converts in the end... they just aren't decent arguments on their own merits.

sure it does, it has more justification than aspirin will ever have.
did you ever see a stoned man steal a TV? or ever heard of one?
what about murder? ever heard of a stoned man kill anybody?

i think it prevents danger more than it will ever cause. i sometimes think it's a anti crime drug.

while drunk people kill, steal, rape and more.

i have heard and even witness people taking higher doses for aspirin for a "high" and it's risking there lives.

unfortunately to the majority of Americans, who isn't the smartest group of people, make alcohol drinking a very acceptable part of our society. I do not see how it is that bad putting it in an argument.
