Got new lights, still skinny shrooms.
    #11378421 - 11/03/09 04:54 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I think I may have pinpointed (no pun intended) why my pins have been malnourished lately, forming into tall skinny mushrooms that abort before they even grow an inch.

I just found out that the fluorescent bulbs I was using were 7100k.  And I recently discovered that what I want is 3500k.  Could this be my issue?

Also, most fluorescent lights have a protective casing over the light, does this affect the color temp in anyway or hinder it?

Thank you.

you want full spectrum lighting (6500k)

get a full spectrum cfl and enjoy proper lighting and the knowledge that your impact on the environment has lessened.

home depot, online, or just open a curtain if that's an option.

cfl's are just energy saving bulbs, you can use any kind of bulb.

Are you pretty sure you are getting enough FAE? and I think that the higher kelvin on the scale is better, 6500 being close to correct. Your flourescent grow lights will be around the 7100k range. Usually the kelvin is listed somewhere on the box and any place with a large selection should have what you want.
Just be sure that you have enough FAE and that your sub isn't too dry.

You don't want 3500 Kelvin. You want 5000 to 7000 Kelvin fluorescent natural or 'daylight' tubes. You're probably OK with 7100.

Make sure you give them enough FAE and misting.

When I take the polyfil out my sub drys, and when I leave it in it doesnt get enough fae.  I have the polyfil in LOOSE and a fan running at all times.  I just dont get it.

If you have the option and are able to do it, take the top off and use it to gently fan your tub several times a day. This gives you a more complete air exchange without drying it out real bad. Just do it gently and not like a hurricane. The idea is to change the air out by volume and not by force. Do this up to 4-5 times a day. briefly and gently. Then just keep an eye on your moisture content and if you feel that it is drying out, you can mist a little bit.
I hope this helps and it may not be the right answer for you but I feel that it is good advice. I wish you the best bro. It really is an art to finding what works best for you.

It just sucks because my other tubs flourished.  Thanks for the info.

Another thing, while colonizing, I notice water builds up and drips down to the bottom underneathe of the trash bag, do I want to drain this and pour it out or just leave it for humidity help?

That light is fine. You are trying to replicate the sun as much as possible. 7100k isn't far from that.

6000-7000 is what you want to shoot for. CFL lights are fine.

That I don't know. I have taken to drilling a small hole in the bottom of my mono's so that when I soak I can allow for a little more drainage and then when it's done all the water runs out. But to your question... I'm not sure.

Yeah I just introduced a new tub to frutiing conditions, going to leave the polyfil out for one day just because there is so much moisture on the walls, the substrate, and a pool of water under the trash bag.  Maybe I'll start another thread about water buildup when I get home from work.

I set my tubs my my window for now, I dont trust the lights yet.

How do I know if its CFL?  This is what my closet set up looked like.

Also I asked earlier, my lights have a protective casing covering the bulbs, does this hinder or affect the color temp in anyways?  Like does my 7100k light with the added protective case bring it down to like 3000k or something?  The protective casing is ridged and opaque so that the lights arent as bright. Im thinking I should take them off.

like i said, you don't need cfl bulbs, you can use any kind of bulb. but if you want a cfl bulb (energy efficient) they are the ones that are spiral shaped.

-and 7100k is more than fine, just use that.

one thing that you may regret is not using trashbags on the bottom. those tubs may look opaque, but they arent. i once had a tub like that pin on all sides to my dismay. thousands of tiny tiny shrooms growing all along the sides and bottom.

-your light is fine, that's not what's causing your problem.

-keep the polyfill in tight and simply fan with the lid a few times a day like someone else described.  Besides that just stop thinking about it so much and allow the mycelium to do its thing.  If it's already too dry after several weeks you should give it a dunk.

-yes, you can pour out that excess water whenever you feel like it.

-no, the plastic cover will not effect the light output or color temp.

he does have a bag in there and side pinning is not caused by light anyway.

-in his quadruple monotub signature post he says he's not using bags. if that isnt this grow then my bad

Side pinning is caused mostly because that is the perfect environment for the things to grow. The RH is good there and it makes them want to grow there. Light is a factor though to some degree but it's mostly the RH I believe. I could be wrong though.

the RH on the sides of your substrate that contact the walls would be 100% at any given time no matter what you used, bag or not.

i'm pretty sure it's caused by light. i'd say im positive but i've been out of the game for a while so maybe something changed while i was away.

Just got some f20 daylight flourescents at 6500k, they are SOOOOOOO much brighter and whiter than the other bulbs I had, definately a huge difference.  I'll let everyone know whats up.

For now, here are some pics.

Here is the 27qt tub of B +

Here is the 50qt tub of Blue Meanie I just introduced to fruiting conditions the other day, lots of moisture so I left the polyfil out for a bit.

Here are 2 close ups of the B+ bin, you can see how small and skinny these fuckers are.
