Just to add to that post, I was thinking: a black light, does it actually produce more ultra-violet light than a normal flourescent, or are they just coated with something that only lets ultra-violet rays out?

I don't know about the final stages of growth, but I read somewhere that too much UV light could damage or kill spores and young mycelium. I don't know how true that is.

Does anybody know anything else about UV light and it's effects on mycelium? (along with anything about my original question)

prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer. Using UV is a way to initiate primordia formation and like I said in the aforementioned post, exposing the mycelium breaking through the casing layer to UV for as little as 1/2000 of a second per day is enough to cause primordia to be initiated. The best light to use would be a flourescent light such as "daylight". All you need is a light that resembles the natural spectrum, if the light is distracting while trying to sleep you should figure out a way to cover it up. I hope this has helped.

p.s. i don't know how effective a black light would be.

sean1234 is correct. Just use a normal flourescent light or better yet a "grow" light. You only need it on for a short time each day. In Stamet's books, he says that too much ultra violet light will damage growing mushrooms and inhibit pinning. Just take sean1234's advice and you will be headed in the right direction.

Peace.

Why do so many people recommend a 12 hours on / 12 hours off cycle for lighting up ones terrarium, then?

i leave the flourescent lights on 24 hours a day, but paul stamets in his books recommends various light cycles all though i do not think it matters because psilocybe cubensis is not photosynthetic it is photosensitive, it does not use light for energy but it will grow towards light.
