how much light?

AFOAF gives thier cakes 4 hours of light a dayfrom a flourescent fixture inside a large rubbermaid, is this ok for pinning/growing? will heat be a problem?

I'm not sure about heat but that much light is fine..

I'd say that unless the cakes/casings are right near the ballast of the flourescent, there should be no problem with the heat EVEN IF THEY RE TOUCHING THE BULB ITSELF. The ballast (The end of the bulb that gives it the power to light) is the part that gets hot. Aside from that, DONT WORRY :)

I dont really see the need for the light to be inside the box. You will definitly run warm with this set-up. Cut a hole in the top of the box ,cover with clear plastic to let light in. Put light 3 feet or so away, keep temps 72-75 and presto chango..........fruits!

the light if 1 foot away from the cakes, you sure that this is bad?

You don't need to cut it, just replace it with other made by you, some metal wire and saran wrap doesn't give you an idea ?
