They are actually able to be used entheogenically- people say that they aren't just because people try harvesting them at the wrong age, or they did something wrong, or because they didn't try enough...
A foot of that cactus's green flesh should be fine for usage if the skin is taken from a cactus's aged flesh, and maybe stressed...

Ok so what you are saying is if I were to maybe make tea for a friend to use a piece closer to the bottom and root the top half?

Yes, because new growth isn't very potent, old growth tends to be more potent.

alright i think i might take a cutting in the next few days as i might have a day with very little to do coming up .  will a pic of the cross section allow for a more definite identification of it's species?

A picture from the top will be fine but a cross section will do also.

Just a thirsty pach, make sure to callous the cut end before planting in soil.

yuppers. thank you. I have yet to have any of my friends try this particular one for potency, would a 8x2 piece suffice for a threshold to get a potency range?

give us the dry weight when you can. Cacti obviously vary a lot in thickness and water weight.
Tell your friend to remove the clear layer of skin around the cactus, then cut out the core and allow the pieces to dry with a fan or at a very low setting in an oven. Average threshold is about 35g, but everyone(and every cactus) is different.

Also, taking from the bottom of the cactus seems like a waste of a rooting system. I'd suggest taking 2 cuts next time, ~12" top cut that can be planted as a cutting, and a mid section for consumption.

Well this first cutting was a little under 3 feet using it to replant and test potency. Then will have two more cuttings of a little over four feet each that I will use to replant. How long does say a tea last after making it. Can it be stored for long periods of time? If made in morning can it br ingested that evening? Does boiling or drying have less potency then say eating or making a chunky cactus shake?
