Washing mushrooms before drying?

Just harvested some GT's. And was wondering if I should wash them? I mean when one deals with shroom growing everything got to be quite sterile so should I wash them or just start drying? (and if anybody asks I'm not growing them on any kind of poo, if I would I would obviously start washing without askin, but since the substrates are: full grain rice cakes, verm and coco coir Im not too sure if thats necessary) yo

Not necessary to wash in my opinion. At least, I've never washed.
When your fruits dry, any 'debris' will brush off.

I wash when they need washing. If they are clean, I don't bother.

Agreed. I tend to brush them off a little before drying, but other than that, after drying everything else can just brush off. The main thing I try to do before drying is brush any perlite off. I also like to let them set out for a least 24 to 48 hours on a paper towel before drying.

If it's P.Cubensis, I wouldn't wash 'em. Dry, then gently brush verm off with a soft tooth brush.

What difference does it make what kind are they? What about for example P.Azureus?

If you are harvesting correctly, there should not be much to clean off.
Simply holding the fruit and using your fingers at the bottom of the stipe, twist it around and whatever is on it should fall off. Then, dry it.
You can clean them before, or after. I just prefer to do it before I dry right after harvesting. After drying I want them bagged and tagged asap =)

Washing P. Cubensis could damage them or make them soggy, which in turn makes them shred or tear.
Agaricus bisporus, for example, is more dense, and you can wash them without fear of damaging them.
It's purely for appearances.

Perfectly put! I was starting to think that I was the only one who took the time to wash off the very end of the fruit. Aside from just being CLEAN, it provides for "TRUE" weight when measuring out your dose. Nothing worse than to weigh out 3gms to make some tea and you really only have 2gms and the rest debris. The same holds true for whatever other reasons you may want the weight to be "TRUE".

It doesn't. They are pretty tough. You can bruise them if you are rough, but they don't fall apart or anything.

Is there any reason for this? Or just some personal preference? I've just been sticking them straight into the nesco after I get any debris off.
I guess that could help me put batches in at the same time and not run the dehydrator 24/7.
