Totems
    #11293459 -

So one of the things that chiefly takes up alot of time for me is shamanism. I have alot of experience when it comes to shamanism, but the one key staple basic thing i still dont fullt understand is personal totems.

Ive done tons of research on totems and have talked to lots of other shamans, buth modern and traditional, young and old, all of them tell me the same thing, when its time for me to know my totem, itll come find me.

In the past month ish ive had 2 wierd incidents take place. Now i live in the wild mainly except for when im in town wasting time on the library internet, so i see alot of animals up close and personal and its normal for me.

well awhile ago i was walking this one path i know in the woods towards this one spring i know. it was late at night about 2am. i was just doing my thing walking when this animal suddenlly shot off down the path in front of me. like i had spooked it. it was all white and about the size of a large dog. except there should be no dogs out in that area. its a very remote location. it also ran extremely fast. within seconds it was gone out of my sight.

then last night i was walking back to base ater doing sum woodcrafting gatherin sum dinner and next thing i know something about maybe 2/3's of the size of the white animal thing i saw in the past, ran off and darted into the brush and bushes at the base of the trees lining both sides of this trail. i was like wtf.

any1 have an opinion that im being followed by my totem? or what?

If you're not conversing with it, or it isn't providing you with information, it cannot be your totem. That isn't to say it couldn't become your totem... maybe it's scoping you out, or prodding you to chase after.
Caution is urged in choosing what you chase after.

What was your reaction to the animal? Were you frightened?

I have usually discovered totems in dreams.
What I have been told is that if an totem is stalking you it has a message for you. You need to ask what the message is.

Are totems synonymous with power animals? Do they have to be animals?

I've had reoccurring dreams about polar bears, and even synchronicity with them in real life. How does one initiate conversation with such "totems"?

Polar bears are animals. From what I have experienced animals are used by spirit as messengers through their archetype. I have initiated conversations through shamanic journeying or meditation. There are also books and internet sites that give the archetypal meanings of the animals.

I believe totem and power animal are from different peoples. I don't know enough to really compare them.

The Anishinaubae (Ojibwe) tribe views totems as personal Manitous.
Manitous being that which exists behind the scenes, within the spirit world.
There are many types of Manitous, from Kitchi-Manitou, the creator, to the Manitou of maize.
Anything can be a Manitou, but it would be a mistake to believe everything you see is a manitou.
It's akin to saying that you're seeing THE spirit of ________. And that spirit will have a name.
That's why they're most common in dreams. It's the easiest place for a spirit to manifest itself.
But the Anishinaube (and many other tribes) believed that these Manitous also resided in places.
Places of power. They would go to these places and fast, or give thanks and offerings to the Manitous.

Clans would possess a symbolic animal to which their family was tied, but their personal Manitou might differ. These totems were often animals, but not always. It might be something inorganic, such as a rock. Often the totems provided instructions on how to find an item of power, how to help the community, or even occasionally how to stop pissing it off

Where your totem was from in the world also indicated its power. For instance, having an eagle as your totem was a very good sign. The sky realm was viewed as much more powerful than our own. Eagles were viewed as relatives of the Thunderbirds, or lightning/thunder... some even felt that eagles were just Thunderbirds in disguise. To have an eagle as your totem was coveted. There are stories of individuals with the eagle totem escaping danger due to unimaginable interventions from the unknown.

So for the Ojibwe, the term power animal didn't exist... nor did the term totem. It was referred to as a personal Manitou. But regardless of what term is used, all of these concepts are referring to this same basic idea of the spirit of an object conversing with you and providing you with some form of power.

Thanks for shedding some light. I had another Polar Bear dream last night, so I think my Manitou wants to make itself known.

If I manage to become lucid is a dream, I am going to try to manifest it. I'm also trying some directed meditation today.

I've had some pretty strong vision's in sweat lodges before, like Kickle said that tend to try to communicate with you. Dreams are one way, meditation, and for me use of mushrooms and peyote worked very well.
