Q's about fruiting in bags. now with pics*****
    #11235841 -

O.K. so i have been growing oysters in tubes i use a 7" flat on a role cut to 2' length.

all is good so fare. i have been waiting till i see pins and removing the log from the plastic.

it seems to be working good. i have also experimented with dunking too and find it slows fruiting on first flush. the water content seems to be retained from spawn just fine.

i have noticed a few here fruit in the bag. i am wondering when to put the x on the tube with the log in it still.

and i would like to know as to alleviate some confusion about were to put the x. some here seem to wait for the bulge to form and put the x on it. and some seem to use the 4 inch spacing. were the bulge is ignored and figure the mushroom will find it on its own.

which method produces more mushrooms. and what happens on the second flush with both tek's. the way i do it the second flush takes care of its self and seems to produce the optimal amount sustainable by the mycelium.

please post examples of pics and observations to support your findings and tek's.

thanks in advance

I wouldn't put X's. When you fill the bags, just put holes in the bags with an arrowhead without the blades on them, so like a really sharp nail, at 4-6 inch spacing. The holes do not need to be so big. If they are too big, it dries out the substrate, and also allows more contaminates to get in.

got that down i use a pare of forceps with pointed tips to punch lots of little holes all over and nothing dries out too much. i have heard of the razor blade arrow head too but used for both tek's i ask about.

so do you put the x in the bag when the bumps form "on.the bumps.. them alone" or do you put the x every 4 inches ignoring the bumps?

Make your slits when you make the log.

That is what Paul Stamets teaches at his seminar and what RR shows in his video.

I have grown logs both ways - plastic on and off.

Stamets states that leaving the plastic on reduces the surface area associated with moisture loss and controls pinning.  In Stamets fruiting room, the only mushroom without plastic is shittaki.

The logs I have fruited yielded the most fruit with plastic on.

The log without plastic created and aborted many pins - the fruit it did yield were few and small.  The logs in plastic produced nice clusters.

I ask RR this question and he told me he prefers no plastic.

I've never heard of anyone slicing after the log has been colonized.

Not to say it's wrong, but is all my doing and reading - never has the subject been mentioned ..... THAT IS FOR Oysters .... I know slicing has been done after colonization to fruit other edibles - but not Oysters.

Oyster newb response:

That grow of mine.. I took the plastic off.. I have 4 more logs that are probably a day or two out from going in the FC. I will leave the plastic on a couple and compare. But my thinking was, in my case, that the humidity would keep the log from drying out too much...?
As far as RR, I believe I saw him mention almost preferring a dryer log for faster colonization, then removing the plastic, then dunking it prior to the first flush. Maybe it's that whole process that makes the no plastic work better for him. I know my logs were well hydrated.. but we will see how they grow in both cases.

And, I made the X cuts right after stuffing the log. I also gave them a 1/4 turn every day (and still do with the others) to keep water from pooling.. I am also hoping that helped keep most of it within the sub, but I am sure excess water dripped from those holes from time to time.. which isn't a bad thing either.

IMO plastic left on is best, that way you can control where the fruit appears and reduce humidity loss.  If you are doing a number of logs and still have to work as well then the extra effort required in removing the plastic is not worth it.

I only have one hole for fruiting and that is from the top of the bag, the reason being is that I stack my logs like a wine rack and so only the front of the bags are visible.

thanks solumvita

for the reply. i am wondering when do you put your hole on top "at what stage" and do you dunk too on 1st flush or only on proceeding flushes.

i am asking all of this stuff cuz i am finding lots of pins all in the bags i did not remove the plastic from.

and it seems the pins are in random spots and not were i put x slits before moving to the fruit chamber.

i am wondering if putting the X in the plastic at time of making the bag might be the answer which i will try but i am betting better pinning on the bags i removed the plastic. i am finding if i poke pin pricks in the bag at the time i make them h20 loss is controlled and if i remove the plastic at first sign of primordia i am getting better progress.

i also find not dunking at 100% colonization works best too.
edit
for mass pin setting

i know people say do what works for you like your wine rack which i have and will convert next but i am looking for production increases and rate increase.

thanks for the replays guys and keep the tek's coming as i will try it if i can incorporate it into my tek.

You do not put any X's on the bags.

Mushrooms grow from 1/8-1/4" holes punched when filling tubes.

i will do this on my next logs as i have a log i did not remove the plastic and its surpassing all the ones i removed the plastic on.

it looks like size and weight are both going to be larger than the loges without plastic.
but i will try a long 3 inch dash formation across the top enter of the log to try to replicate this
though the ones with no plastic have a greater pin set.

i think some one with a headache said this about that statement's guy .......thanks Migraine

i am leaning that way now too.

The hole is at the top of the bag throughout colonization just not open it is closed with a ring of plastic that is stuffed with a polyfill to reduce contaminants.

I generally do not dunk at all.  That said I have had 600g from 1 kilogram of wet substrate.  Maybe i could get more if I dunked.

the logs i have in the chamber with no plastic look like this.

now

and they were like this the day before

some progress but the bag with the x is still winning i think

it was like this yesterday

and today its like this

you decide because this one is out the bag and dunked too. hope it forms right
