Good questions! I prefer to live The Symbolic Life, as Jung entitled on of his Collected Works. That means that I view the archetypal forms of myth as the Divine Cookie-Cutters of my otherwise indecipherable life. Like the Phenomenologist, I look for the 'invariant features' of experience. These invariant features are themes, of which there are many. Without the myths to illustrate these themes, life remains what William James called "a buzzing blooming confusion." Myths are the archetypes made visible, and I recommend Jean Shinoda-Bolen's books to illustrate this the best (Gods in Everyman and Goddesses in Everywoman). If all we perceive is the unique existential givens of experience, we miss the universal, archetypal patterns. It is my own contention that all individual differences are a product of universal elements arranged in varying amounts. A metaphor for this is the snowflake - each uniquely different, yet each comprised of the same water molecules (the invariant universals).

I wrote a book, a dissertation, on how our personalities are different by virtue of different proportions of motivations (universals) as symbolized in the chakra psychology of Vajrayana Buddhism. I still take this stance when doing therapy, and like the Buddhist yoga psychology, I see a particular interior journey which manifests in our outward behaviors. Those outward behaviors speak loud and clear to which psychic centers predominate in our personality. It is just like the ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal germ layers of early zygote development which later translate into what kind of bodies we have, and by extension, what kind of temperaments we have (W.H. Sheldon). The yogic saying is: 'the inner projects the outer.' And the myths that seem to predominate in our psyches also determine how much of a Hephaistus were are (how handy are we at repairing/building), how Apollonian (logical/musical), how Hermetic (guider of souls/therapeutic), how Zeus-like (paternal/philandering), etc. I'm mixing models, but physical and psychic realities well up from invisible points of origin and flesh us out. It is not a matter of learning myths from books, they live us, and we are blind as long as we do not realize this. The hero's journey is the journey of such realization.
