Where's the hole?
    #11161922 -

So I just inoculated my first batch. I'm growing Ecuador cubensis with rye casing method. When it came time to introduce the spores to their habitat I had problems finding my inoculation hole. I had a Tyvek filter, so the best I could do was look at the cap from underneath and try and guess where the hole was. When I first prepared the jars I tried using a marker to mark where the hole was, but when I screwed the lid on they became mismatched. How do you go about finding your hole? Any useful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If your using RTV, why are you using Tyvek???  There would be no use for Tyvek if your plugging the hole up with RTV.  No hole to breathe through no need to Tyvek.....

wear latex gloves and feel for the hole with your hands. use some hand sanitizer if you are paranoid like me.

but why diddnt you just mark the hole after screwing the lid on?

i used to have the same problem.bent quite a few needles missing the hole and hitting the plastic lid through the self healing port.
simple solution.used a biro pen to mark the hole when making the lids.

the lids in the picture are very simple.
heat an awl red hot.
make two holes.
cover one hole with piece of old innertube glued in place with ordinary puncture repair glue.mark the hole!
push/pull some polifil through the other and your done.

good luck

That's what she said!

 hahaha, couldn't help myself. but no, seriously, in order to prevent damaging your needles, i make it real easy on myself and after I've assembled my jars, but before i load them into the PC, i use a soft lead pencil<easier to mark on the tyvek, any pencil should work> to gently mark where the hole is located. just like filling in the bubbles on the test sheets at school, i make the mark large enough to see through my glovebox. i don't use ink because it tends to bleed when PC'ed or swabbed with alcohol.
and don't toss that needle that's bent up. you can fix it with some careful surgery, using a pair of needle nosed pliers, and some fine grit sandpaper. just straighten the tip out with your pliers, then lay the sandpaper on a hard surface and lightly drag the tip over the sand paper at the same angle the the tip is beveled.

Damn, the solution is simple. I dunno why I didn't think about marking the hole AFTER screwing the lids on. I may have to have the doctor check me for some sort of retardation....Thanks to all that replied. I hadn't heard of RTV and will have to look into it. Thanks again.

problem solved

1/8th inch hole filled with silicone
1/4 inch hole covered with tyvek held on by micropore tape

you can see thru the silicone so you wont bend your needles
and you have a hole for GE as well

i do all my lids like this and never have any problems with them
