Permeability of Tyvek, and accelerated colonization
    #1562892 - 05/20/03 02:32 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

This friend i kind of know was wondering what the permeability of Tyvek is. If no microbes or anything can get through it, but C02 can get through it, then couldn't you use it instead of lids on your jars? This would then allow 100% of your C02 to be vented continuously if you turned the jars upside down and incubated them in this position. This could greatly speed colonization of jars. Just a thought... This would also make it possible for anyone with a microwave and no PC to sterilize jars with almost 100% efficacy, you could use rubberbands and tyvek disks so that there were no metal parts going into the microwave.

one problem i know you'd face with tyvek lids is that the substrate, esp. the upper portion, would tend to dry out too fast. that's why folks use a lid with small holes with tyvek, to reduce the surface area exposed to evaporation.

Anno tried this. It leads to too much air exchange and loss of humidity. Look here:
