tyvek for ventilation?
    #865360 - 09/05/02 12:58 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

i have an idea for a tank i'm making, and according to multiple searches of this database, no one else has tried it before. i have your basic plastic storage box with tight fitting lid, and i'm going to use perlite humidification because it's so easy and effective. my idea is to cut two holes around 5cm in diameter in the short sides of the tank about six inces from the bottom and cover said holes in tyvek. this is similar to the rhyche hawk tank idea, but i don't have a fishtank bubbler so i was just going to use a fan to blow new air through the filters several times a day. would this decrease humidity too much? co2 can pass through tyvek, right? is this safe and everything? if it matters, i'm probably going to use the standard pf tek of brownflour, rice and vermiculite. what does everyone think?

huh. i've used filters before on the tops of canning jars, and i understand that the process behind this is that gasses are exchanged while contaminants are not. so if gasses can pass through tyvek, i figured a fan would help facilitate the process. a year or so ago i set up a hawk tank, wherein the tube from an aquarium blower-thingy was set up on one side and a synthetic filter disk on the other, and that worked quite well for gas exchange and humidity. i was just wondering if i could eliminate the electric blower in order to keep it simple, but i guess not.
