Laminar Flow Hood Question
    #11099332 -

Hi yall

I'm trying to build 24"X12" a laminar flow hood. Really have to search for these HEPA filter . My question refers to the thickness of the filter.

Is there a difference between the 3" thick, 5 7/8" thick, and 11"? There will be a difference in static pressure of each filter, however I was more intrested if there would be a difference of effectiveness. If I buy the 5 7/8" would that be more or less effective than the 3" or 11"?

I thought all HEPA filter were effective 99.97% @ .3um. Thats why Im questioning there thickness. Im assuming the thickness difference are for application differences but not sure.

If anyone has personal experience with any of these filters, or building their own horizontal laminar flow would be great! thank you.

yes i think there is a difference. I may be wrong but i think the thinner filters dont achieve laminar flow. You need a certain thickness i think. could be wrong

You can't replace a 5" thick aluminum and ceramic filter with a 1" thick paper vacuum cleaner filter, regardless if it says 'hepa' or not. There is much more involved. You want a laminar flow hepa filter, which means it must be rated to withstand pressure on one side. If you pressurized a paper filter, it would blow out.

i couldnt really find much but found RR saying a 6-11" thick ceramic or aluminium filter is whats required.

Also found that most true hepas are 5 1/2 to 11 inches thick.

6-11" because it builds the static pressure, which is how you get a true laminar flow.

I have the 5 7/8" thickness filter on a 12 X 24 and it works great.  Don't forget to use a pre-filter.  I use a super-allergen furnace filter as a prefilter.  It keeps all the big dirt, hair, bugs, etc., from clogging up the expensive laminar flow filter.

Thanks all for the help.

RR . . . can I ask you what kind of blower you are using? How many CFM?

Dayton. 250 CFM @ 1" static pressure.  They don't make my model anymore and have switched to made in china blowers to make a buck.  Try to find a good blower from an old HVAC unit.  Your local heat and air shop probably has a boneyard out back they'll let you dig through.

Thanks RR. Yeah thats the squirrel cage blower. You see horizontal hoods made with inline blowers also. I was more interested in the CFM. Don't want to blow holes in my filter.

Thanks again all.

So psyched for this! It's going to make work much more convenient and efficient. :crazy2:

The CFM is really important, you'll find some blowers (like PC fans) that will output really high CFM, like in the 1000 range, but when you apply static pressure, they drop to something like 90CFM. You want a blower that is meant to push air with static pressure.
