fastest growing / most nutritious substrate????

Hello,

I am currently using and have mastered using rye grains and I have 12 jars growing with rye but the colonization speed is extremely slow.  My Alacabenzi jars are one week from being it being a full month, and the jars are about 30% colonized.  I also just inoculated some jars with penis envy uncut on Sep 9 and I only see one jar with one rye seed growing mycelium on it.  The temperature varies 80 degrees farenheit to 90 degrees farenheit so I SHOULD be seeing faster growth but nope.  Fresh air exchange does not seem to be the issue even though I am keeping the jars in a closet.  There are like 6 nail sized holes in each jar.  I use about 1.5 CCs per jar and I inoculate with needle against the glass.  I inoculate about .75 on opposite sides of a jar.

So, anyways, what is the most nutritious and fastest growing substrate because rye grains are just way too slow for me.  I keep on hearing that substrate jars should be fully colonized 10-15 days.

Corn:  Hear this has great colonization times but how well does it do for nutrition?

Cracked Corn:  I hear this has godly colonization times but it has been said that the yields have not been great.

Millet:  I hear that this one is one of the best but least used.

Wild Bird Seed:  Many many people seem to use this because this is extremely cheap.  But how well does it do in those 2 categories?

Rye: currently using.  Seems to have huge yields but the colonization time (for me at least) is so so slow.


I use the roger rabit rye grain video, followed it quite perfectly, and multispore injection is used.

Man i used WBS for my first time, and believe me, after 5 days they were ready to be shaken, and then a week after, ready to use....i just spawned it to some peat moss/verm mix and day 6 already and i am seeing tremendous growth, check my logs, i will have pics to show soon

this whole post requires some clarification, by saying substrate do you mean "spawn" or are you going to case the grains?

The jars of WBS i do are usually completely colonized and ready to spawn in a week or less.

Using LC of course. G2G really speeds up the time as well.

Also, having your jars slightly on the dry side will speed colonization along even more.

according to my own experience and RR, probably the most nutritious and best colonizing would be rice bran

Although this doesn't really answer your question I can tell you this: You are keeping your jars at too high of a temperature.

I have a few questions for you: What is the size of jars that the seeds are in (pint, quart?) Because of the chemical reactions happening inside the jars the temperature within the glass is up to several degrees hotter than on the outside. So, if your incubating them at 86F then they're really higher than that.

Your jars can be kept at 77F and experience great colonization rates. If you crank the temperature too high or too low it will take around 3 times longer to colonize than if it's at the perfect temperature.

Yeah...I think that right now my room is at an even 75F almost all the time. The highest I ever let it get to is 77 because past that it seems to suffer.

I would stick to lowering the temperature a bit and seeing how it does. There are plenty of other great seeds that you can use (Millet for example) but I have had such a great consistancy with Rye I think it would be hard for me to switch.

Maybe with a lower temperature you'll see improvements and decide not to move away from it! :-)

I think you are confusing yourself, read your original post again. You asked for the most nutritious substrate. Then you replied with "spawn" which would tell us you are planning to perform the act of spawning to something else which is a bulk substrate. Just to throw my 2 cents in, and again I'm no expert, I always have slower growth in my jars when the moisture content is too high. What is your method for soaking the rye??

okay, I soak for 24 hours and then  boil the rye.  I then allow it to sit in the strainer for about 15 or so minutes.  It leaves little marks on toilet paper..

Moisture content seems to be my root issue when slow colonization happens.  Have had WBS that were way too wet take close to 2 months vs one w/ good moisture content taking 3-4 weeks.

Also your temps are a good 10 degrees higher than what I incubate at (room temp).  I'd look at both of those issues.
