Oh good.  Always nice to have confirmation.  It hasn't been dripping any water, but it still sticks quite a bit.

Is there any point in simmering at this point, then draining again before loading jars?

Nevermind.  Not simmering seems okay.

After worrying and rereading many WBS soaking threads, I have decided to soak another 12 hours.  I let the WBS soak overnight, but I didn't really pay attention to whether or not it had expanded, and I'm not convinced that the texture is quite right (still rather firm).  Fortunately, with the WBS in that laundry bag, I just put the bag in a tub, and covered the WBS with water an inch or two deep.  Now when I go to drain (again), I just have to take the bag out and let it do its thing.  In the future, I will just dump birdseed in the laundry bag, rinse, soak, rinse, dry and call it good!  I forgot how much you learn along the way when you do this.

This is so true.  With the pillowcase/laundry bag you can swing it and use centrifugal force to extract some of the extra water by swinging the bag.  If you don't want to wait more time for the soak then simmer they both are used for moisture content

I would if I didn't have to wait for the grains to drain again and finish 300 pages of articles for this week.  I'll do it when I get back from the library.  Hopefully take them out around 9, have them drained to my liking by 11 or midnight and then PC for 90 minutes and go to bed.

That doesn't make sense.  You never want to remove the foil lid.  It does not impair gas exchange at all and provides the essential service of preventing contams from falling into your cultures. It's standard lab practice to foil the top of everything.  You don't need any thing else unless it's convenient.  Plenty of people have used drinking glasses with no lid whatsoever, aside from the foil.

Silicone will however impair gas exchange.  There's really no point to it.  You don't want, nor do you need, a sealed system.  People have come up with way too many methods to solve problems that don't exist.

Injecting through the polyfill works just fine.  You don't even need the polyfill.  It only serves as a potential wick for contamination.  Polyfill is usually only used in the lab for test tubes, mainly because it's a little faster than tearing up all that tinfoil.

Not sure where they would be getting that from.  If you use standard methods (i.e. PFtek) you can't remove the foil or your jars will contaminate.

If people are removing the foil they are screwing up.  I haven't read cult in quite awhile but I see a lot of lid modification teks.  None of them are going to get you better air exchange than the standard method of leaving the holes open and covering it with foil.  It's all wasted time.

Pasteur figured this out and proved it 147 years ago.  You don't need or want a sealed system.  Any sort of lid or goose neck is plenty.  He's still got an uncontaminated goose neck flask in a museum that's well over 100 years old.  Filters and seals are a complete waste of time and money unless you have a special reason for them.  As long as you can follow standard methods with decent technique you're only wasting time and money and slowing your growth by lid foolery.


Scrotesmcgrotes, I used to use the exact same system (minus the silicone).  I used electrical tape for awhile.  If you PC a small piece with a folded under corner next to the hole you can just put it over the hole after injection.  However I finally realized I was wasting my time.  If you are going to want to play with the jars and look at them all the time then it might pay to seal the hole.  Otherwise nothing is required at all.  You still should have a foil lid in place throughout.

I am haveing mad contaim issues I think that I am going to try this.  To be honest this is what I did up until a month ago and had very little contaims.  Since I moved I started using tyvek and have had 1 in 4 jars contaim.  Thought it might be an environmental factor, but maybe using tyvek instead of foil is the culprit.[

Thanks.  This is the easy part.  Sterilization is the hard part.  But I'm excited to try the inoculate-through-alcohol-soaked-sponge method.  That makes lots of sense to me.

Question - Do I need to wipe out the inside of the jars with alcohol or anything before throwing the grain in?  I'd assume as it's getting sterilized, that this would be a superfluous step, but I have alcohol and I'm willing to wipe if need be.

I just wash the jars with soap and sterilize.

You should really follow a tek and try to not over think it. Do Fooman's tek for WBS, except only soak in hot water for 30 minutes.

So follow a tek but change it?  I have to say that I can be the master of ghetto improvisation.  I find that as long as I can accept the failure its a learning experience.  Who knows I may stumble accross something profound?
