Re: Step by step, first time in a long TIME (with pics) [Re: scrotesmcgrotes]
    #11094370 -

Just knocked up 7 more jars with treasure coast.  I had a really good/long week of school so I thought I deserved some more jars.  Anyhow, the first batch has been sitting for 6 days now and about half the jars are starting to show myc growth.  Part of the reason I did this new batch of jars is because I think the first batch was a little low on water content.  So this time I simmered my grains before PCing them.  We will see if it makes any difference.  If there's something worth taking a picture of, I will document it.

Peace,
Scrotes

Alright, the first set of jars are coming along nicely.  On 3 consecutive weekends I've done 7 jars of Hawaiian, 7 jars of Treasure Coast and just this weekend 7 jars of Costa Rican.

Here is what the Hawaiians are looking like at 13 days.

Time to shake?

I prefer to shake at incoc, and once at 20-25% colonization and leaving them.

I think I'm going to wait for a little more colonization, maybe 3 more days, and then shake.

I would shake now man.  Shake it up until the whiteness goes away a little bit, and in 24 hours you will be glad you did.  I'm a new grower, but I can tell you I am very pleased with how well shaking speeds up colonization.

Yeah, they're safe to shake.

Yeah?  Okay.  I will give them a shake.  How vigorous?  Just try to get everything redistributed?

Wow, shaking is totally awesome!  3 days later and the jars I shook are almost all white!  I have to find some gypsum before it's time to spawn.

Anyhow, I have a question about colonization.  Of the second batch of jars that I inoculated, 6 out of 7 have nice myc growth after 10 days.  However, 1 jar shows nothing.  I decided to separate that jar from the others and keep an eye on it, but I'm not hopeful.

On a positive note, the last batch of jars that I inoculated over the weekend are already showing nice growth at 4 days.  I take the fact that colonization times seem to be halved from my first attempt to my third attempt as an indication that I am getting better at this!

As it stands now, 20 out of 21 quart jars are coming along nicely!

Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

If you see nothing it's probably a bacterial contam.  Wet spot or some other nasty has ruined the jar.

Then again it could be that you forgot to innoc that jar, or you didn't inject enough to cool the needle and the myc fried on the way in.

Either way just throw the jar out and start a new one.  Quality goes down a ton if you try to resterilize and innoc.  And even if it's just slow you might as well toss it and start another one.  Too many times I bet on a slow jar making it and ended up having the 2nd round end up beating it.  It's always faster to restart it as soon as you realize it's slow or contammed.

jar was tossed

20 of 21 jars going as expected so far.  good enough for me.

the first round of shaken jars has almost fully colonized the WBS.  almost time to start thinking about spawn!

So are the jars ready to go when everything looks colonized, or is it best practice to wait a week after everything looks colonized?  I don't remember if the waiting is just for BRF cakes.  It makes sense that the middle of WBS jars should be colonized at the same time as everything else due to the shaking?

If so, I'm ready to start doing some tubs!

Hot dog!  Unfortunately even garden centers in my town aren't carrying gypsum, so I have to go the drywall route.

Should I make one big tub or a couple minis for my first go round?

I would sugest not putting all your eggs in one basket.  Do several casing or spawn then case on several containers.  It's a huge disappointment for a tub to go sour.

Good plan.  I'll make a couple of 18 to 22 quart tubs to start off.
