Black sunflower seeds.. or not?? in mah' WBS jars
    #4065157 - 04/17/05 11:34 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

black sunflower seeds are argued in TEKs i guess. Some say.. leave em in.. some say.. take em out. What's the real deal on this crap? I just did 3 jars of 1qt WBS, 5 days ago... is it gonna be okay?

Some people say to remove them while others say it doesn't matter. I have heard a good argument, I think from Diver or Agar, that leaving the seeds in allows more room for aeration. So if the sunflower seeds are not colonized or offer no nutritional value, they will act like verm and provide space for air.

I wouldn't be too concerned about contams with sunflower seeds, as everything in you jar will be PC'd at the same time. Just soak, fill, and PC.

I personally have removed all of the floaters, including sunflower seeds, and I can tell you that it's a tedious task. One that I would like to avoid in the future.

Good luck man.

The ratio of sunflower seeds to remaining seeds will be less than 2%, so he will not be colonizing solely on these. The majority of what is left over will be what is needed.

sf seeds are good. I remember back when people used to think the sf seed and thistle seeds increased the potency, this i don't know, but i do know that the sf seeds are good. Don't waste your time taking them out or our time asking such a redundant question.
Agar has a pic of a jar of straight sf seeds and it colonized just fine

Excellent

They were inoculated 5-6 days ago, and no progress yet. I hadn't put them in the incubator until today .. so they were sitting in the 70 degree house for all that almost week. Grrr.. I hope to see some signs of growth soon.

Next batch of WBS jars I do will be with new lessons learned. This past time I had put a double layer of tyvek and also a polyfil layer through a hole on the lid. I've learned that either by themselves are good.. and to use a coffee filter and rubber band too.. just to be on the safe side. I've also learned to take out the 'floaters'.. even though you guys hadn't explained exactly why a 'floater' would be undesirable. Could you??

Thanks shroomfaces

Sammy

Air pockets and nutrients.

Why the hell not?

A small % of Sunflower seeds adds lipids (oil) to a WBS mixture, as well as considerable cellulose/lignin (from the shell). All of which is a good thing - in small amounts.

Other "floaters" don't do any harm, excepting they offer less nutriants than fully developed meaty seeds. I don't take the time to remove the floaters. But, whatever floats your boat. Remove them, if you wish. Which does no harm - either.
