removing sunflower seeds from WBS
    #1935530 - 09/20/03 03:27 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,

As I dream, I'm going to make the big step from cakes to grain. For any number or reasons, I plan to case WBS. Anyway, I know sunflower seeds are large and slow to colonize, but are they worth the trouble or removing? A collinder with just the right sized mesh would make it relatively easy, but I'm looking for more experienced advice.

Thanks
redoC

Wow, I just answerred my own question. When, as I drempt, I went to put the seed to soak, all the sunflowers rose right to the top. They're BOYANT! Wow, I'm a newb. So it's ridiculously easy to remove sunflowers seeds!!

redoC, who should try to do things before asking about them.

EDIT: Stir and repeat. 6T, this is really looking good. I owe it to your tek!

just stir it up when they're soaking a few times to get all the ones trapped at the bottom or in the middle

I don't remove them. Spores seem to love germinating on them and they don't cause a problem.

6T says "There is no need to remove any floating husks, or sunflower seeds. These add lignin ( a good thing) & do not harbor any more possible contams than does the millet. It is all going to get thoroughly sterilized - anyway." in his tek.

it's not neccessary, but if you really want to do it, i have an even easier way to remove the sunflower seeds. it involves no stirring, straining, or sifting.

1. put your pot in the sink and fill it 1/2-3/4 full, depending on how much seed you're going to put in there.

2. then, cut off a corner of the birdseed bag and pour the seed into the pot. almost all of the sunflower seeds will float. a few will sink with the rest of the seed.

3. put the pot under the faucet and turn on the water. when the pot overflows, the water will take the sunflower seeds with it.
