Spawn Bags

I'm having some problems with moisture after PCing my mycobags. I am using Sporeworks's pre-sealable large gusseted spawn bags loaded with a mixture of rye and vermiculite.

Grain Prep:
Soak the rye for 24 hours then simmer for 20 minutes until grains are fully hydrated.
Let drain on a screen for 10-12 hours.
Mix in 5-6 cups of vermiculite per 5lbs of grain.

PCing:
Load bags 3/5 full.
Seal them and wrap top of bag down so that the filter patch is covered.
Pack into pc like this and pc at 15 psi for 2 hours.


After PC has cooled, release pressure and pull bags out.

After all this, there is tons of moisture inside the bags....


Any help?

If you are draining them for 10 hours they can't have excess moisture. The moisture you see inside the bag should be condensation. After simmering they dry faster. They should dry in up to one hour.

When you drain your grains, a rule of thumb is to put them over a piece of paper towel for a few minutes. If they leave a wet spot they are too wet. If they don't they're fine. Do this once and you'll be able to tell if they are too dry or wet in the future!:wink:

i usually cook about 10-15lbs of rye at a time. I'm pretty sure im getting the simmer down. I load the same batch of rye into jars and am getting the right water content. Its the bags im having trouble with.

If you let the bags sit for a day or two, you'll probably find that the grains re-absorb all that condensation and they'll look normal.  This happens to me every time.  They look soaked when they come out of the PC, but after a day or so in constant temperatures the kernels will look the same as when you put them in the bag.

Grains prepared for large spawn bags should have about 20% to 30% less moisture than when placed into quart jars.

Draining for several hours doesn't help.  You'll notice that after the first five minutes, no more water drips out.  The rest clings to the grains.  You should toss the grains around in the strainer while it's still hot so the excess moisture can steam off.  Get the grains quite a bit drier than you do for jars and you'll be OK.

Actually RR I have a large 4'x4' screen i've manufactured for steaming off moisture. I toss it around every couple of minutes until its no longer steaming.

The grains were allowed to dry for 10-12 hours... thats sitting all day in the hot sun.

Is it possible that steam can get inside the bags from my pc?

I have an DAKadan 41QT pc with two pressure valves instead of a rocker...

why would you drain for 10 hours, shit 5 minutes is good most of the time. thats probally the main reason why their dry. 2 hours pcn time is a little long, try cutting it down to 1.5 hours. are you cutting the temp down when the weight starts to rattle or leaving it on high, because if your leaving it on high that could be another one of your problems.

I cook off about 30lbs of rye at a time. I set it to steam off on a 4' X 4' screen. And I'm having problems with bags being too moist inside....

I use a 41qt autoclave. It doesn't use a rocker weight. I installed two overpressure valves...

well bags are my thang, but ive never used a autoclave, im sorry, i thought you were pcn it. but still try to use 1.5 hr. i do between 10-20 lbs of wbs, and i jus pour out of the pot that i simmered it in, into a strainer,  however much will fit, until the water stops dripping, give it a good shake, put in my bags and then another strainer full until its all done.

an autoclave is the same thing as a pressure cooker. lookup AA940.

I've used wbs as well and its really easy to dry the stuff off. rye is a bit harder because it absorbs so much water.
