My old loaded 15.5 qrt AA pc ???
    #11039595 -

hello all...i currently have a loaded on the stove AA pc. i normally would use the other Presto pc with the weight that jiggles loudly @ 15 psi. The question from me is how can i tell when it's working properly with 15 psi showing on the gauge...i mean i don't hear any sort of pressure relief if the "toggle switch" item is to the side and not switch to straight position where i hear pressure. This is my first time using this PC..could someone briefly instruct me...it's still loaded with goodies on stove top with gas off! Help Anyone plz
PS-Ive gone and tried search but need to get on with it.

Thx for the reply  Saucey...I'm thinking that the PC is coming up to pressure 15 psi according to the gauge. What i don't know is where should the little toggling lever be when in heated sterilizing mode ? straight up or lying down to the side ? This is a old model AA pc and does not have the weight jiggling and releasing pressure to  maintain 15 psi like my Presto pc.
I guess what i should have ask is " Does anyone know how to operate the old AA pc with the two position toggle on lid? "...i am little afraid of things going KA-BLOOWY because i didn't ask!

The pressure relief should blow off at 22lbs( or was that 27?)  if you can get it to that, and it blows, then you are completely safe.  THe pot itself is good for in excess of thirty pounds, so you need not worry.  If your stove can't get it to this pressure, again, you're safe.

Mine doesn't ahve a toggle, but I believe the correct position is down.  Up would bleed the steam out contantly as it is produced.  RR says that you should have it UP, blowing steam for the first ten minutes and then put it down.

What youhave is not a PC it is an autoclave.  the differdence is that a PC will suck in air while it cools and the autoclave should pull a vaccuum.  This means a PC is sucking in contams that the autoclave isn't.

In reality, the vaccuum very slowly fills the clave with air, but this slow process introduces far less contams than a PC.

Hope this eases your mind.

Good growing,

Jef

Thx Jef....Oh i have a true blue AA autoclave !!! I got this off ebay some years ago and never used it. i had normally used the Presto with regulating weight on top. This is my 1st time using this AUTOCLAVE and wasn't sure after i loaded it up with items then turned on the heat ??? Yes you should bring the pc/autoclave to breaching steam to flush air ( 1st 10 min. or so ) then close thing off for heated sterilization of hour or so. I'm shaky about not having some sort of escaping steam to maintain a 15 psi while heating!!!! but i guess you just put the toggle in the down/side position after 10 minutes of it being in up position to initially evacuate....then the down side is for 60 minutes or so  of sterilizing and prayer. OK , 10 min up and 60 min down while watching gauge. thanks all, Imorph

I have 2 of the AAs with toggles.

Use like this:

-Fill with items to be sterilized, add water, close lid and put toggle in the UP position.

-Turn the stove on high. Once the whole PC has heated up and steam is coming out through the valve put the toggle in the DOWN position.

-Let the PC come to pressure, checking the gauge to see where your at. Once at 15psi turn down the stove so it will maintain the desired pressure (15psi). During the first 20-30min I check back very regularly and adjust the stove until it is at just the right heat to maintain 15psi.

Hope this helps.

yeah, Pitcher C i am still in 1 piece!...that's basic the way that i figured it out after Jef told about the up and down positions...I think with the weighted regulator types you moderate  the jiggling sound by gas nob. With the gauge types you watch the gauge to a stable 15psi setting by moderating the gas nob likewise. 1 is sound Que and the other is visual gauge reading for awhile.
I think that you should still be listening for strange sound changes. Oh and do check back from time to time anyway. Thx all for tips. out all contams!
