**UPDATED TODAY 21 SEP* Mycelium removed from broken 25% colonized jar and birthed - will it fruit?
    #11030158 -

I accidentally broke a jar that contained approx 25% colonized mycelium and didn't want to lose the fruits of my labour...

I decided to try an experiment and test the hypothesis that a chunk of mycelium of any size can fruit. After all, mushrooms that grow in nature can come from very small amounts of mycelium.

I took the 3 pieces/ chunks of mycelium and followed the exact same processes one would follow if they had a perfectly 100% colonized cake. I then took these 3 pieces and put them in a mini terrarium/ fruiting chamber to see if in fact this would work.

It's been about 4 days and all looks good.  The mini cakes have grown slightly fuzzy from the high humidity/ moisture content and have slightly grown in size (pic attached).

The question I have for all of you is, do you believe that these mini cakes can produce provided they are properly maintained, as one would normal fully colonized cakes?  Your thoughts?

It's been a week and still no pins, tho the myc is looking healthy and gradually increasing in size.

I've got them in a mini-shotgun terrarium with an energy saving 6500 daylight bulb on a 12 on 12 off timer, as well as an aquarium air pump set to go off for 15 mins every 30 mins.  The internal temp is approx 66-76*F.

Does anybody have any input/ ideas when they should start pinning?

They will probably fruit, if conditions are right.  I picked a mushroom that had grown from an outdoor "patch" yesterday. A couple of weeks ago I broke a couple of cakes up after their third flush and threw them in with the abandoned soil of a hanging flower pot I have outside. When I picked it, it pulled up it's substrate chunk, which was about 1" diameter and hadn't linked to any other pieces of myc in the pot, so I know it's possible.

The conditions aren't even perfect, it's been really hot here, and dry, all I did was throw them in the pot (regular soil) and water every other day. Now there's about 10 more nice sized pins popping up, about three of these little grey mushrooms come and go every day, and there's a few little patches of green mold, but they're still growing nicely, who knows how.

Hey mate, not really any need for a pic bcuz it's not too diff looking than my earlier pic.  The main diff is I moved the 3 pieces together and they are now connected and growing into each other, which is great.

Well, I know that RR said to leave 100% fully colonized jars for another week before birthing bcuz they will still take another week to pin anyway so I'm hopeful.

Yeah mate, they can be resilient little f*ckers, which is a good thing!  The jar that broke and I took this myc from is the same. I left some of the substrate on the counter by the sink for a day or so and next thing I knew I had another little chuck of myc growing! Temp wasn't ideal nor was the RH, plus that substrate could have easily been contaminated by mould; yet, it persisted!

G'day, pls find attached a few pics of my mini-cakes. These are BRF cakes.

They've been in the terrarium for over a week and the mycelium looks healthy and it has overgrown the casing layer of 100% verm but has not yet pinned.

Do these bumps look like primordia so not redunk, or given that they have overgrown the casing should I re-dunk and roll, or just re-patch?

Cheers

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my post but you haven't really provided me with any useful info or answered my questions. If you don't think it looks like primordia then what do you think they are and what would you suggest I do? These are the questions I want answers to from people.

Cheers

Yeah mate, I was and am but asked the question because I read on several posts where RR and other Trusted Cultivators recommended patching or re-dunking and rolling... just wanted to know if I was in the same boat.

Cheers!

There has still been no signs of any pins so 2 days ago I re-dunked and rolled.  Today is the 3rd day and still no signs of pinning. The temp inside the chamber ranges from the upper 60s to mid-70s*F, RH is a constant 90-98%, regular FAE is provided throughout the day, and 6500K daylight bulb  on 12 hrs off 12 hrs + natural indirect sunlight throughout daylight hours.

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that these cakes will never pin; however, I will give it the rest of the week in the chamber.

Could I please get some thoughts and opinions from people that know what they are talking about please? Any advice?

Cheers

This is a bit late, but I don't think re-dunking/rolling was necessary. If the myc completely overgrew the casing and your RH is in the high 90's then they should be holding more than enough water at that point to carry you through the first flush. Just my humble opinion but I would keep waiting, unless it's too labor-intensive for you to do so. I would not give up on them unless they contam.

I know, but after doing a lot of research on the site I found several different posts where RR and some other trusted cultivators recommended people to re-dunk and roll. I don't know if that advice could also apply to my situation, tho I asked the question a week ago, but I have seen no improvements since first putting these in the chamber. Yes, they overgrew their casing and I waited over a week with no pinning; therefore, I figured it couldn't hurt to try a new strategy.

I keep reading on the site how people get pins within 4 days of birthing so after 2 or so weeks I'm at a loss...

How long does it typically take before cakes have their first flush?
