Dark Classical. Symphony

Please refer to this post, im hunting for darker classical in high quality recording. (im somewhaat of an audiophile) Being that I dont normally listen to classical (I listen to electronica) I dont know exactly who im looking for.. etc

Mozarts Requiem is pretty dark classical, Bethoven wrote a few requiems too

Check out Tchaikovsky, especially the 4th 5th and 6th symphonies (especially mvmts 1 & 4 for each)

He got more depressed and suicidal toward the end of his life, and he performed the 6th right before he died. It's more sad and depressing sort of dark than evil and pissed... But it's Great Fucking Music.

Not being really classical music, but its dark and played on classical instruments, checkout the band Apocalyptica. They are four guys (well, 3 now) that play metal songs with cellos. They cover a bunch of Metallica songs as well as pantera, faith no more, and slayer. They also due a cover of In the Hall of the Mountain King, be Edward Grieg, that must be heard to be believed, its really that amazing.

The first CD, is just cellos, as well as there 2nd one, but on their 3rd one, called Cult, they brought in some percussion, which further enhances their music. Their newest CD is all their own writing and they got Dave Lombardo to do the drums for em, they never had drums before...definitley check em out.

I'm a slavophile, and Tchaikovsky's my fave composer. I would agree with you on 5 and 6, but I couldn't disagree with you more about 4. What were you thinking?!

I would give Orff's Carmina Burana a try, if you're okay with vocal. For orchestral only, give Dvorak's cello concerto a go. If you're going for dark, I might also suggest any late 19th/early 20th century German composer, but it's a little atonal for my taste.

Dude, the whole Shining Soundtrack has great (modern) Classical Scary Shit.
I mean like horrifying.

Try Ingrid Bergmans(sp?) film scores and David Lynch's stuff as well.

Get a good recording of Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen. Wagner is pretty heavy stuff in general. Mahler's symphonies are pretty dark and heavy as well. Beethoven is less dark, but still quite 'dense' and heavy, so perhaps check out some of his symphonies as well, although they've never appealed to me that much. And of course, Bach's Passions are very much worthwhile, so your collection is not going to be complete without at least a Johannes or a Mattheus Passion.

@TWolfe: I'm afraid Apocalyptica is an entirely different story. The fact that the band members have enjoyed professional classical education on cello is contrasted sharply by the music they make. Although they do a good job (especially in their more recent recordings; their covers are nice, but the novelty wears off quite quickly), I doubt it's the sort of stuff Barbi is looking for.

Oh, and before I forget: undoubtedly the 'darkest' classical music I am aware of are Caesar Franck's church organ works. You're going to need some happy pills after listening to those, but especially for an audiophile, the sensory experience is very hard to beat.
