mushrooms wont fruit
    #10883753 -

i am on the fruiting phase of my first attempt to cultivate some mushrooms.  i have 24 cakes that all have healthy mycelium and i have them in two containers with a little over an inch of damp perlite in each.  i have been using a desk lamp with a 13 watt compact fluorescent for light shining in on the side because the lids arent transparent and they are stacked on top of each other, and an automatic heater set at 83 degrees. a couple cakes have popped out some puny mushrooms but the bulk of them havent done anything.  i could really use some help from someone more experienced.  also i dont know if it matters but there is still some damp verm on top of the cakes because the growing reference i have been referring too said just to dump off the dry verm i topped off the jars with before sterilizing.

First off ditch the heater on your fruiting chamber.

2nd an inch of wet perlite sounds on the low side. How does the humidity look? You should see condensation on the walls. You also didnt say if you were fanning. You should be. Or you should have some kinda of filter holes in the thing so it can breathe.

If those small fruits mature and the rest of the cakes are still stalled, i would give em the ole dunk and roll treatment.

anonjon gave some good advice

How long have the cakes been in the birthing process? Do they look dry?
get rid of the heater unless your room is cold. Save energy

pull your cakes out soak them in water 24 hours in your fridge.  use the same jars you colonized them in, that seems to be the easiest for me.  after 24 hours roll them in vermiculite (fine or medium) after letting them dry lightly.  while they are in your fridge, add perlite  to your chamber so you have a total between 2-3 inches. the perlite should be thoroughly moist, but if you pull it aside and look at the bottom of the tub there should be very little water.  it should be a near unmeasurable amount.  i usually soak my perlite in water for hours in another container, then transfer the wet perlite to the chamber and it tends to be the perfect amount of water.

fan, mist, and exchange air 2-3 times a day.  give them a good amount of light, this will initiate pinning (up to 12 hours a day with bright fluorescent should be fine).  the heater is unnecessary, cubes are pretty tolerant to temperature as long as its not extreme one side or the other.

these techniques should get you pinning in 1-4 days (4 if they are stubborn).  After you flush, re-dunk and roll.  Continue til you got no more fruits!

Remember, DO NOT use condensation as an indicator of proper humidity. Condensation inside indicates that the inside of the container is a different, (hotter), temperature than the outside. ALL that moisture USED to be in the air, causing humidity. Invest in a good hygrometer, you'll be glad you did.

I would just dunk them at room temp, don't put them in the fridge

fridge or not is debatable.  most teks say to use the fridge.  it slows any possible contam growth and causes a large temperature drop which can help trigger pinning.

in my findings, side by side, fridge has always made more pins.

It's no longer debatable, and is in fact outdated. Concerning cubensis you don't need a temperature drop since its a tropical species. It's not helping anything, and in fact can cause initial pinning to take longer.

NEWB, The amount of fanning depends on your FC(fruiting chamber) Most pros state 3-6 times a day works best.  You mist right after fanning to bring the RH up immediately.  It also helps keep the perlite moist.  You want to either have a pump sprayer or a reg one held pretty high so the mist is fine when it hits your cakes or casing.  Most newbs have a little better luck with an all verm casing than cakes.  Cakes can be pretty picky about things.  Get rid of that heater, most say the best pinning temp is 72-78.  IME 80 won't hurt but using a heater, come on.  To be honest, everything you're asking has been asked 10,000 times each.  Do a little research before asking too much.  We all did it too though so you'll get a pass.....this time.

You CAN use condensation as an indicator of humidity for cakes. Somewhere between foggy and dripping will work. You don't need a hygrometer for cakes.

Don't mist cakes, when you mist the white fluff on the cake it matts down, turns blue, and doesn't want to pin.

Soak it, roll it, stick it in w/ 3+ inches of perlite, and fan it. You can't go wrong. It'll grow cottony fluff within 2-3 days and probably start pinning on day 4.

Don't stick em in the fridge, you'll just slow em down. Even if you believe cold shocking works (I don't) you've got a plenty big drop in temp just from turning off that heater.

Here is some ecuador cake fruiting on perlite in a single container.

Here is the same cake 2 days after being picked and soaked for 12 hours. (right now)

My lazy cat didn't even bother to roll it in verm, just soaked it and stuck it back in.

stop spreading wrong information, condensation is in no way related to humidity and it has bee proven. Take a cold can out of the fridge, what happens?? you get condensation. Oh my humidity must be really high! NO! It happens even in desert climates where RH is really low.

Someone a  while back posted a photo of there fruiting chamber with lots of condensation literaly dripping and asked what the humidity was. everyone was sayd 99% 95% 92%. wrong is was 86%.

Just because some tek says it or you find it in lots of posts doesnt make it truth. Theres lots of info in this forum thats either outdated or just flat out wrong.

Also misting isnt nessesarily to maintain RH (but it does help) its mainly to replace moisture lost from the substrate due to evaporation. Its better to mist then fan afterwords aswell so that you dry any pools of moisture that may have formed on fruitbodys.

It could just as easily be argued that the anal retentive members of this forum are spreading misinformation by telling everyone that they HAVE to have a hygrometer and they HAVE to use the shotgun tek and they HAVE to shower, brush their teeth, and wear a face mask to play with their mushies.  This advice is often offered when it's not even related to the question at hand. Someone has to play devil's advocate lest you all start getting high off the smell of your own farts.

The temperature differential between the inside and outside of a mushroom terrarium doesn't even come close to that of the refrigerator. It's a ridiculous comparison.
