There often isn't much purpose between bickering with someone over semantic arguements, it doesn't go anywhere productive. My post was just to try and get these guys to stop caring so much about the internet, and stop wasting their efforts on something that would return very little satisfaction beyond the "triumph" of one's own ego.

Seems like you need to follow your own advice and stop taking this so seriously. Had you ever considered that the people who are doing what you call 'bickering' actually enjoy this interaction and find it entertaining? Well at least that's why I participate. Are we being intelligent beings?

Here's a quote I thought was appropriate for the thread...

It's from a great book called Therapeutic Trances by Stephen Gilligan. This quote was taken from a bit where he was talking about the conscious/unconscious mind distinction...

Quote:
In all of this, a person should not be confused as ‘being” either the unconscious or conscious mind. To reiterate, mind is a computational tool by which the Self knows and expresses Self in the world of experience. The potential of a tool to create is equivalent to its potential capacity to destroy or oppress: its effects depend on how it is used by the Self. Dynamite can be used for peaceful or violent purposes: a leader can destroy or incredibly enhance a culture (e.g.. hitler vs. Christ). In the same sense, the psychological processes that create pain for an individual can be used to generate satisfaction and creative solutions. This explains in part why the unconscious can be benevolent (the humanistic view) or oppressive (the Freudian view): It depends upon the individuals relation to it and his or her willingness to accept all parts of the self as valid.

A primary factor in all of this is the extent to which the individual equates his or her self-identity with that tool. In other words, a person identifying himself as being (rather than expressing) a particular process will be used by (and thus cannot use) that process. For example, suppose an individual has a strong rule that states that he must be intelligent (and thus cannot be unintelligent). He will thus be highly motivated to exhibit behaviors that support such a claim, while simultaneously avoiding at all costs behaviors that could challenge the validity of such a proposition. As such, he will hesitate to experiment with behaviors that have uncertain outcomes associated with them, and consequently will become entrenched in familiar (habitual) patterns of thinking and behaving that simulate intelligence. This would of course inevitably disallow the expression of intelligence, as such a process requires independence, spontaneity. and creativity. Of course, the individual might act "intellectually”, though at best this would be a painful simulation.

If you think me advising people to think logically on a philosophy forum is anything more than me entertaining myself in a way I'm comfortable with then maybe its really you is being self riteous.  What is it other than self righteous to shit all over someone's fun?  When I shit on someone, its not for their motivation, its for their content.

If we aren't going to argue semantics then why don't we just take votes to see who wins arguments.  That would be a real load of :stonedjerk:

I certainly didn't mean you any harm xFrockx, I was simply poking at your use of the term "right".

It is the content I'm discussing, there are pages of semantic arguement in which everyone is trying to make a point and no one is listening. Then people get irritated and pissy. I wonder why people care this much.

 This is all. No harm. I merely suggest going for a walk.

For me its not about caring about what is being argued, its caring about how somthing is argued.  I don't think it does any of us much good to have an argument without keeping things logical, and even if it does do us good I will still spend my time arguing semantics, because really that's all we've got if we're going to make a serious attempt at reaching a common ground.  I can be meticulous without being serious, and that's about what I do.

Taking for granted: We are taking the way we live now for granted and acting like our past did not happen and assuming it can never happen again. We have created myths of the past, so we can project an equally false myth of the future. Thus, if we forget or ignore the true past, this will literally cause us to lose in the biggest possible way. To come all this way and then stumble on the last step is the worst possible thing that can happen, period. It is the ultimate mistake.

Those that do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it.

For millions of years, our life was a daily struggle just to survive the day and then the night. We were hungry and afraid for millions of years. Things like murder, rape and cannibalism were standard behavior. It was more horrible than anyone can imagine or describe in words. Yet, when we finally get in a good situation for a brief period, we spend our time trying to get richer, be winners, and have as much sex as possible.

Are we really intelligent beings? We are not acting very intelligent.

Cockroaches have sex over two hundred times a day and can run a scale two- hundred miles an hour. Cockroaches can do what most people are trying to do now better. Trying to do what a cockroach can do better does not bode well.

We are the exception
: Cockroaches have been on earth unchanged for more than three-hundred million years, and there have always been a lot more of them than us. We are the exception to the rule of animal life; they are the rule.

The ultimate tragedy: We now have the opportunity to change our nature and escape the animal realm forever, but instead of taking advantage of it, we are taking our situation for granted and trying to live with our eyes closed.

When the truth is realized people will stop worrying if parts of their bodies are too big or to small or if they are cool, popular, winners or losers etc.

Fools paradise: We are missing our only opportunity to escape the animal realm. We are burying our heads in the sand and hoping some myths will save us. We are busy playing mind games and missing an opportunity that comes once every seven hundred million years for what? We are not happy living the lie.

All we have to do is acknowledge the truth, but we are doing the opposite and trying to live in a lie. Could anything be more stupid or tragic?

Einstein said, there are two infinite things, the universe and man's stupidity.

It was forgivable in the past when we could not know the truth for certain, but now that we can know it for certain, it is unforgivable.

This thread is an interesting display of human intelligence. On one side we have people who see it like it is and on the other side we have people who see only what they want to see (or don't see what they don't want to see).

People who don't believe in anything are constantly pointing the finger at anyone with a clear understanding asking them to explain themselves even when there will never be an explanation good enough for them. The ones pointing their finger asking for an explanation are the same people who refuse to offer an explanation because they don't believe in anything.

As this thread chases its tail around and around we see how even the strangest of denials are evidence of an intelligent mind.

And of course you know which is which because you see it like it is. Which is an example of unintelligent.

Ultimate truth = transformation. It is the reason that Jesus says the truth will set you free. The truth transforms you by showing you what you truly are already.

This is how we can know that traditional religions are not telling the truth, at least not in a way that people can understand it. No one is being transformed by what they are teaching. When something has been tried by millions of people for thousands of years without success, an intelligent being would begin to realize that it does not work. It needs to find what it is missing. All the wars that have ever been fought and the ones being fought now and in the future will be fought because people do not know the truth.

We have to stop playing make believe; we know better now.  We have to seek the ultimate truth and use it to transform our minds.

I think it would be totally in line to make this statement about your beliefs also. I know tons of new agers who haven't been changed a wit by this shit. And now would you know if no one is ever changed by those other religions? "Twas ever thus" dood. It's only the occasional person who wakes up and IMO it's not because of his/her alignment with this or that philosophy or religion. It's in spite of it.

The truth is not in any belief system.
I don't believe in anything.
I give my full attention to "that which is," the present moment.
Sometimes it is necessary to learn from the past and plan for the future, but not to dwell on the past and worry about the future.

If people hold something to be true, even while completely in the present moment, they are believing...

If they don't hold something to be true, then how the f@#k do they speak an opinion about anything. Even saying "that's untrue" is holding "that's untrue" to be true. It's inherent in the way language works.

Supreme ignorance of believing is not the same as "not believing". Just saying "I don't believe" or "I don't have any beliefs" doesn't undo that, by even saying "I don't believe" presupposes the the speaker holds that statement to be true, and if they hold it to be true then by definition the very act of saying it is an act of believing.

Now having said this I'm expecting someone to go, "But, but, but, I really don't have beliefs and I don't believe either. Prove it if I do." To which I will answer "sure you do" pat them on the head and let them dwell in their ignorance of how they use language to frame their experience...

This is well said and correct. After all, at some point, we do have to accept a truth to stand behind. Whether that's fairly simple and straight-forward truth such as "Shit, I'm falling from an airplane" or "I think lowering taxes helps economy" (I don't personally believe those ones, tho), it's still one alternative picked from countless others. Short offtopic obvious remark:
This format gets extremely interesting under the effect of psychedelicss. 2C-E may allow to see the rapid version of how clouds disappear, a fine and in-detail description of the movement of air currents - Intuition allowed to work directly to visual world to morph the experienced truth match the truth of near-future or the truth normally invisible.

So, even simple things need some consideration when they are being believed in.

Even that word "intelligent" is not exactly correct and a bit loose term for it, I think we're "intelligent" in a sense we can choose the world we live in. And not only our friends, our house, our job - But also our attitude, ideology and in the most extreme sense, our perceived reality.

Whether animals can do that I wouldn't know, but I am sure our dog was smarter than majority of humans.
