can cannbis grow successfully in this environment?
    #10793902 -

ok let me explain a situation.

Let's say that in my backyard I have a forest garden or a paradise garden or whatever you want to call it. Basically for two years I built up all the soil in my yard organically by doing things like sheet mulching and cover cropping and composting constantly. Nothing was planted except for the trees I wanted to get started quickly. Fast forward to present day and my yard is slowly becoming the paradise I dreamed of. The soil is rich, soft, and loamy all over. The developed trees keep it in place and keep it rich. All my other vegetables and fruits thrive(for the most part). I still continue to compost and sheet mulch in the offseason to maintain and further build fertility, but my garden by in large takes care of itself through leaves falling and other ecologically beneficial relationships that I have tried to create. It's like my own little ecology in my backyard. OK you probably get the point now to get to my point.

If i just clear a little area that gets pretty much full sun will cannabis grow successfully without me having to add anything other than the occasionally mulch and compost? And by successfully I mean will it be chronic outdoor bud? I want to say yes because my soil is so rich and full of humus that I figure it would have all the nutrients a plant could want and more, but my experience with cannabis indoors leads me to believe that cannabis needs more precise nutrients and care than say a pepper, tomato, or walnut tree.

I would just go for it and try to grow em, but i cannot afford to waste valuable space in my garden that could be used for food/organic matter because my situation wont allow it.

So what do you think? Any thoughts or experiences?

also, let's not limit this discussion to purely cannabis now that i think about it. What about plants like E. coca, poppies, and plants that could go into an Aya brew.

I would have to say yes, cannabis will grow quite well in the environment that you have created. The only amendment I would make is to add a good amount of garden lime to the soil before planting. This will ensure that the pH is ok, that your plant has sufficient magnesium and calcium to develop strong branches and also aid in utilizing the organic nutrients and micro nutrients in your soil.

Cannabis is a fairly easy plant to grow. The soil you have will probably be rich enough so no nitrogen is needed but you can always use an organic fertilizer if the plant needs it. As the plant comes into flower you will want to add some form of Phosphorus (P), and then as the colas mature Potassium (K) will be needed to fatten them.

Hope that helps a bit anyway..

You need to do a search for 'AACT', which stands for 'actively aerated compost tea'. Basically, you put a good handful of finished compost in some panyhose and tie it off.. steep it in a bucket of water with a fish tank air pump bubbling in it. You can add molasses or liquid seaweed to the brew as it 'cooks' to boost the microbial activity and richness.

This mix will contain a full ecosystem in itself, the reason you run the bubbles through it is to keep it aerobic (just like a hot compost pile). You're supposed to let it steep with the air stone for 24-48 hours, and then, simply water.

Its supposed to be excellent for your plants. I envy your progress, I only recently began breaking away from chemical fertilizers and controls. Any plant which loves rich soil will thrive in your yard by the sounds of it. If your cannabis plant does get deficiencies, you can always hit it with some organic fertilizers to maintain the balance.

You'll be fine, goodluck!

thanks for the input guys. compost tea sounds like it should solve all my problems if i have any. The only concern is ph as my garden is made to function pretty much at neutral to accommodate the most diversity, but the right amount of lime should solve that. good call.

i know cannabis is practically a weed and hemp/schwag can grow almost anywhere but medical grade buds are another story and thats what i am going for.

I have grown buds indoors hydroponically for who knows how long, but  I have a great interest in permaculture and sustainable farming/eating so if i could still get my medicine without chems I would just be ecstatic. I know that this new organic method probably won't deliver the yields/quick growth that hydro does but quality is my main concern.

In my humble opinion, the quality of outdoor grown cannabis (when grown right) is superior to indoor grown. If you know how to understand what a plant is trying to tell you, you should be able to give it what it needs and produce some good quality gear.

cannabis is classed as a weed it will want to grow any where. the question is not if it will grow, just how well it will grow. in the condiction that its got or u given it. soil sounds u have sorted. thats about the easiest part of it all the real question is. do u get alot of good sun days and if so in ur back yard how much light does it get and will u get enough light to induce flowering 12 sun 12 dark!!. as i said u can grow it any where  but how much do u want to get back for the risk of it. good luck.

The only problem I ever had with outdoor growing is the slugs and whatnot Chowing down on them.

Do It!
Your garden sounds like the perfect environment for cannabis.  Cannabis grows just as well or better than any other plant in the veggie garden.  If your veggies are huge, then your weed will be huge.  Some Cannabis plants love good old compost, and that guy is right. Aerated Compost Tea is one of the best things you can do for your plants.  A few cups of compost, 2 tablespoons of pure unsulphered blackstrap molasses and a small amount of organic fertilizer that is for grow and for flowering(depending on if the plants are young or flowering), 5 gallon bucket with water and a powerful airpump with airstone just does amazing things.  But, it is important to have a well balanced compost.  You can get your compost's NPK checked at an Agricultural extension office at a local college or university.

Other than soil, cannabis loves lots and lots of light.  As long as it isn't over 90 degrees the plants will love the light.  If your area is really hot, a small amount of shade during the afternoon is really important.

The seeds you choose to grow are the most important choice you will ever make.  Get good seeds!  No seeds from bags of weed will do!
If you grow in Northern attitudes you need weed that can finish flowering in your area.  You might want to sign up for this site unleashdagreen.net  They are a forum and a seedbank and they sell really good outdoor seeds for northern growers.  This site is also the friendliest weed site out there. But, you have to sign up and look around to figure out whats going on.  Most sites are like this one, where everyone is like 17.  If you want to lean more from one of those sites.  I recomend icmag.com.  They are also a seedbank with great seeds, but they have so many seeds its hard to know what to choose, and many of their strains are not as good as they appear in their descriptions.
You might also want to learn about auto flowering marijuana plants.  They start flowering 3-5 weeks after they start growing no matter what conditions.  They stay small and are discreet.  They are also just as potent as any other good strain.  unleashdagreen.net has some good Diesel Ryder autos.  At icmag.com their seed site, seedboutique.com has good autos under the breeder mdanzig, and the strain is bluestreak.
Good luck, send a pm or say hi at udg, and I'll help some more.

Sounds like you have given a nice environment to grow in.  Mix some of your soil with bat Giana and beneficial bacteria.  Some pear lite and water with decent nutrients and you should be on your way to outdoor chronic beware of mold and bugs.  happy grow in
