Sceletium tortuosum (KANNA) from seed success :)
    #1131306 - 12/11/02 10:22 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Seeds planted 1st October 2002...

For the last few weeks seeds have started to germinated.

The only treatment was a 24-hour soak in water. The seeds were planted just below the soil surface. The soil was watered when it was visibly dry (Little and often). The tray was kept at room temperature, which has been getting quite cold during the night. They seem to be sprouting were the soil has been disturbed since planting, not sure if this is significant.

hello,
I too now have 3 sprouts of sceletium, finally
I let them soak in water for about a week, then transfered them to a damp cloth until germination.
What type of lights are you growing them under, if any?
Ive got mine by the window right now, but they seem to be stretching..  very very thin stems.  I have a flourescent light set up, but from what I read, flourescents are no good for this species?  Id really hate to have these die..  any thoughts?

Does anybody know where I can get some information on growing this? I would like to grow some, but I dont want to spend money on seeds if I wont be able to do it.

Nice one usefulidiot

Mine are also by a window right now and also have a very thin stem. They have had very little light in the last few days (thick fog outside) hopefully they can cope with poor light over the winter and thrive in spring.

whiterasta
"I have started a small flat of S.tortuosum.I got good germination at a steady 55-65F temps in 2 weeks but only after mixing the seed with sand and shaking vigorously to score the seed coat (I use this on cannabis to speed germination in strains with thick husks) I use this method for most of my poor germinating varieties with good sucess.I've found with species like Scleletium cuttings are so much easier to work with I usually try to only seed them once and just save seed for emmergencies.Bon Chance!PS lovely photos you post, wish I felt confident enought to share my green house."

more info..

Sceletium seeds have two basic requirements for germination. they have a
water soluble germination inhibitor which must be leached off either by it
sitting in a pot for several weeks or by mechanical means such as soaking in
running water. also the temperatures must be right or they will take much
longer to sprout or they wont sprout at all. temperatures above 78 degrees F
will tend to inhibit germination. we found that the best way is to have
temperatures which fluctuate daily between 55-60 and 75-80(which is when
they germinate in their native environment). we also tried 70 degree
constant warmth, but this was not as successful. we also tried a 1000ppm
gibberrelic acid treatment for 24 hours prior to sowing and this seemed to
cause all the seeds to sprout within a few day period(occuring after 8 days
or so) rather than having seeds continue to sprout over a month or so.
as you said, they can simply be placed in a pot and waited for. this is
basically what i am doing now in my greenhouse, which has the necessary
temperature fluctuation during this time of year. this can take up to 2
months for complete germination though, and is still dependent on
temperature factors. to recap, i think the average consumer should know that
a) they should use a sterile mix b)soaking will improve germination c)
high temperatures are no good for these seeds d) temperature fluctuations
give better results e) they should consider using a fungicide if they are
just going to put them in a pot and wait.

- Lack of natural light: short UK winter days and lots of fog, rain, sleet and recently snow.
- Temperatures are also quite low.
- No added heating or lighting.

But they do look healthy. They should take off in late spring.

Interesting, are you providing any sort of artificial conditions, light, temp, food etc..? If not, why?

Artificial Light = No: cost & space.
" " Temp = No: Room temp is good enough.
" " Food = No: not yet..when they are a little bigger.

very interesting.. it's like they sprouted into dormancy cause of the conditions.. I've got the same thing happening to some tooth-ache plant seedlings that i keep away climate regulation
