Uncased monos, tons of little fruits around the edges. aborts, etc.
    #10784603 -

So I have been using varius mono setups.  The most recent has been 27 qt sterilite latch boxes.  It just seems like I'm getting heavy pinning on the edges and very small fruits, if not mostly aborts.  I am using a 6500 k CFL on a 10/14 cycle, WBS spawned to hpoo/coffee/coir/gypsum/verm.  Strain is Matias Romero, which I have always heard is notorious for aborting, but I'm hoping I can make this strain perform because it does well outdoors.  Sub depth is about 2 inches.  Misting and fanning take place at least once a day if not out of town, up to 3 times a day.  Any ideas?  I feel like I know what to do to make them fruit, but they just won't go.  I have a different strain spawned and ready(Koh Samui) so hopefully it's genetic, however I am also doing some EQs that are behaving similarly, although they tend to grow full size a little more frequently than the Romeros.  One thing is, my room temps stay around 80 degrees f.  I live in the south and it's summer so keeping the AC on high all the time to cool my room to 70-ish is out of the question.  It's too expensive and the roomies all agreed to keep the bills down.

Need some pics, but I'll guess "too dry, and fan moar".

... 10/14? Really? 12/12 is too easy for you?

The main reason I use 10/14 is because I figure it's 2 less hours of bulb heat per day plus I feel that it is debatable whether or not 2-4 hours makes any difference as far as light is concerned.  The main thing is keeping the heat down.  I guess I could try a longer light cycle to see if that helps.  Maybe the benefit of extra light will outweigh the detriment of the extra heat.

Heat... what kind of light are you using?

if it helps. i had great success with a mono setup up, i left it alone for 5 days to colonize under a sheet and just uncoverd it. never did fanning or misting. just natural airflow in the house, with polyfill stuffed holes. used popcorn and coir/verm/coffee, temp was roughly 26C and humidity around 100 all time. started pinning in 7 days and keeps going. no problems at all. i dont do a thing to it. isnt that the point of a monotub tho? why must you fan and mist it daily?

the modo i go with it "water doesnt boil when u watch it." maybe leave it alone and see what happens. probably diddnt help you but try letting it just sit there. oh and i dont use any lights, only inderct sunlight. that way heat stays down. i have GREAT success. pins n fruits everywhere.

daylight compact cfl.  One bulb in the grow area.  It's not as hot as an incandescent, but it does produce a substantial amount of heat.  At least enough to raise the chamber a couple degrees.

2" is thin and needs moister to pin well.  Fruits on the edges means dry or less than optimal RH and the shrooms are forming where the moister is.  Mist it down heavy and remove all aborts.  You can also place a piece of wax paper over the substrate,  mist and paper you should have a nice pin set in a few days.

So maybe I should start cutting my bottom holes a little higher and use more sub to bring it up to 3-4 inches?  I have always read that thicker is better.  I have been using 2 inches because I figure I can spread the risk out a little better, ya know, just in case one tub catches the green, I'll have a backup.  I have noticed that a lot of my initial moisture evaps and collects under the bag during colonization of the bulk even though I use a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio.  I have noticed a little more action out of the subs that I either dunked or injected water into so maybe moisture is the problem.  Perhaps I should try casing?  I'll have to buy new tubs and drill the holes higher.  I guess I'll experiment with a couple using thicker sub.  On a side note, I just plucked a fruit from my outdoor 'trash' patch that had a cap the diameter of a CD!  80 grams wet!  I know it isn't epic, but it's my record so far.  Thank you mother nature.  :sun:

Maybe its the 2" substrate depth. Never gone that low before but I here below 3" and fruits are small.

More FAE will help to combat heat issues (and most other issues) but you still need to keep humidity up. I heard putting a wet (not dripping wet) beach towel over a fan is a good way to drop temps a few degrees if the growroom is closet sized.

I wouldn't recommend putting more substrate on it,  but you can put a casing layer of Jiffy Mix or 50/50 to get your conditions better.  Look up late casing or hyphea's pinning strategy.

That's another issue.  I think the 5" desk fan I'm currently using to circulate air and vent heat is a little small considering the heat these tubs produce.  I'll probably go pick up a little bit bigger one to put in there and see if that helps cool things off and help with FAE.  Since I'm around right now to tend them, I have the polyfill removed from one hole per tub and I'm making sure to keep them misted every couple hours with good air circulation in the room.  Got these bitches on intensive care!  Another thing, I have officially developed the 'trich nose'  I can smell that signature nastiness way before a tub shows it now.  I would say it's different than 'dirt' as people describe it.  It's kinda got a sour undertone.  Hard to describe, but I know some of you know what I'm talking about.

I wouldn't add substrate to my existing tubs.  Just thinking of modifying the thickness for the next go around.  I would just plan on trying to case some of my newer tubs as they colonize.  The recipe would probably be peat/verm/lime in about a half inch or so layer.
