old mycelium = no damn fruiting!
    #1635816 - 06/15/03 08:22 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

hey fellow shroomers,
after making a few posts and pm's it seems the reason my cakes are producing warped fruits that abort prematurely (big stems with tiny caps) is due to senescence, or plain old age .

I'm just posting here to confirm the diagnosis and see if u guys agree.

I wish someone told me this but it seems that u cant continually transfer mycelium from one cake to another and continue fruiting it indefinitely. which is what i tried to do because my only spore print attempt failed (most of the spores already dropped). From the cakes I started from spore I did 3 transfers before the problems started. is old age the cause of my probs? is 3 transfers enough to cause this? is it possible to continue a strain by transfering the mycelium?

if it is, it looks like i have to start from spore again - any strain suggestions?

thanks for reading and any replies in advance!

I'm apologize if i put this in the wrong forum, but i though more ppl here would be informed on the topic of mycelial senescence and what the best technique is for preserving a strain or mycelium from a cake that fruited well. Does one always have to go back to spore?

I don't know what could be the reason for your problems but I doubt it is senescence. I had no problems with cubensis even after 8 transfers.

thanks zeronio, anybody else have a clue as to how many transfers one can do before starting from spore again?
