Uk Season 09
    #10759916 -

With all this poor weather we're having i think the season will come early this year. My friend has already found his first liberty cap.
Thought we needed a place to discuss UK hunting as we don't have the same species as america & austrailia.

Welcome to The Shroomery.

You should try and get some photos of your finds!

There is no need to refer to yourself as "SWIM" on this message board.  It will not legally protect you from anything, and it ends up sounding a little bit silly.

Anyway, let's see some pictures of mushrooms fruiting in the UK!

Here is the pic of the little liberty cap my friend found, sorry about the awful quality my phone doesnt have a macro mode ill bring a digi cam next time.

I was out today and came across a mushroom that looked very simular to the liberty cap, the only difference was it was a 'simpsons' yellow colour.. anyone know what this is?

That is not a liberty cap, it is Conocybe albipes.

Bolbitius vittelinus.

youl be lucky to see libs this early,I've never seen them at this time of year.
the earliest ive ever had them is mid august but even that seemed like a rare occasion.mushroom season seems to be coming later every year,i hope it does come early this year tho,and i hope we get some good flushes this time cause the last few have been quite poor.

I haven't been hunting yet, although i have been wanting to since I've been seeing different kinds of mushrooms all over the place for a while now (I live in north east England). I got excited when i heard that a couple of you guys had already found liberty caps, why do you not believe them Rockefeller?
I don't know if its possible for them to fruit this time of year or not, I've been putting off a serious hunt because I've thought that although it has rained a lot it hasn't quite been cold enough. I'm no expert, i only picked and ate mushrooms (liberty caps) for the first time last year, but i know i will now do it every year from now on.

1) Liberty caps don't start to fruit until the temperature drops.  Its still summer.
2) Almost any little mushroom looks like liberty caps to someone who has never found them before.

If you search for posts with the title "liberty cap id request", you will notice that only around 1% of them are liberty caps.  Its 60% Mycena, 35% Conocybe albipes, 4% other LBM's.

There are about a dozen people who post here regularly that actually find liberty caps.  If they reported liberty caps now, I would believe them.  But they won't, because they are not out there yet.

Its definitely still too warm. Once you feel a slight chill in the air you should be able to hear them calling - lol

I reported my first finds on the 25/8 last year (London), however that was definitely only due a fluke cold snap and me having a good spot. But they also seemed to disappeared for a couple of weeks after that as temps rose again.

One tip though, if youve got "spots" check em out in a few weeks. If not Id wait until the seasons really upon us and start looking or its like searching for a needle in a haystack. Well in my opinion.

any other year i would 100% agree with you alan, but i don't think you know what a nice "summer" we had in europe.

can't remember such low temperatures in june

here's a post on mycotopia (i hope i'm allowed to post this here) from someone in germany who also found first liberty caps.
http://forums.mycotopia.net/wild-mushrooming-field-forest/56359-liberty-caps-july.html

but it's getting warm now so i think we have to wait another 6 weeks until they start

That's badass! I've never found them that early. Our summer here in Germany wasn't as bad as yours apparently, but it was still shitty with lots of rain and low temps. Not cold enough for libs to really fruit in the parts of Germany that I am at, however. And I fear that it's going to be one of those "late summers" now where we get all the heat in August and parts of September, which would be nice, because I was really looking forward to some kind of summer that deserves the name, but at the same time it would suck, because it would mean a delayed main mushrooming season and I really can't wait for it to start. Fucking dilemma.

I agree with Alan, that's c. albipes.
Alan, you forgot panaeolus, I'd say at least 40% of the supposed libs we get here are pan foes.

Cheers for IDs I was wondering what the Conocybe albipes were. They've been popping up everywhere in the last week and Bolbitius vittelinus seem to fruit all year round here.

Get a room in Scotland, you two, dammit.
Me, I am like Yoda. Hot and humid jungle atmosphere is where it's at. Plus food so hot that others would use it to polish chrome. My favorite chilies are being tested for their suitability as chemical weapons in Indian military labs. I like to clean my pores out.
