UK Heads up, Liberty Caps

Hi, First find of the year. I found them in the Peak Distric, near Buxton. There where not many about and very few brown sticky ones but the conditions were good so I think in a few days I'll have another look. I'll keep you posted.

Hi this is my first post on the board, and also my first time I will be Mushroom hunting after reading much information over the past couple of months. I live in the North of England and started seeing a couple of small ones around *edited out*, and a GIANT Fly Agaric in a protected area, but I had been led to believe they were not desirable to be consumed so i just left it. Note: I haven't actually been hunting yet although I will next month when the weather gets wetter.

Edited to remove some names, after reading the rules (sorry!).

Also could anybody please link to some articles about UK mushroom hunting, the only site I've seen is McShroom. Thanks!

Hello, very cool find.I have a question though.Would you consider this early to be finding liberty caps in your area?Or is it just he start of your season.I'm in the southern u.s so there aren't any semilanceata to be found to study the growing patterns or anything.I was just interested if this is an early find for your area or if its just a sign of the the conditions getting to the right point and the season approaching.

Cheers..Have fun

Hi, I wouldn't say that late August is early for the Peaks, unlike last year when they came out in July!
see thread
I usually start looking in the second week of August but they don't peak until late September/October. In the south of the country in Somerset, I have found Libery Caps as late as December, merry xmas that year lol.

Great, i'll be looking after it rains next, but I'm also curious: Will the police be monitoring areas where large amounts of mushrooms grow because i seriously dont want to be caught with hundreds of Class A mushrooms in a bag :S

Well ive set the alarm for 7am, I want to go looking tomorrow

its been raining so fingers crossed I get some.......

if I do i'll obviously have to make sure they dont collect any mould on them, which happens after... a day... so... ill need to do something to prevent that!

im not talking about drying anything!

Is it possible to get spore-prints from Liberty Caps for recultivation?

Yes, it is possible make spore prints but expect them to be contaminated.

You can clean up the culture on plates using antibiotic agar but good luck cultivating them, Psilocybe semilanceata is notoriously hard to cultivate.

Ive just picked some liberty caps in the rain this morning

havent been to bed and went out at 6.30, now its 7.30 and im back with enough for a decent trip I think from roughly amount I got

I have 2 pictures of what ive just collected, but its in massive jpg file just off my sisters cam.... does anyone know how to minimalize it? Id love to show you!

unfortonately there was not many, and I had to almost completely outpick my "lucky" spot, which never fails when I go to get them (this part of a cowfield)

anyway, theyre starting to come out, good times ahead!!

anywya i may trip alone tonight as theres not really enough to share for 2 big trips, and i only like to trip big!

Thanks for the advice, biotek.

It doesn't sound like it's going to be easy but I'll do some swatting up.

Cheers,

MM

Look for a free program called "ifranview".

A google search should find it, or do a search at tucows.

I just wanted to say thank you! If I hadn't read your post a few days ago, I wouldn't have been motivated to start hunting. Glad we both made out well. Happy Picking my friend!

I'm a Brit and I've been on 2 hunts but they were at the start of August and now I've broken my foot :frown:

Bit gutted but there's quite a few fields that have or have had animals living on around me so I hope to have some luck when I can walk.

Good luck guys.

I was at the Leeds music festival and was watching Queens of the Stone Age but was quite near the back so I decided to crowd surf closer. While I was surfing I accidentally kicked some guy in the face so, him being a twat, he took off my left shoe (my favourite yellow shoe!) and threw it. I crowd surfed to the very front and was set down in a mosh pit and you know how it is with pits, three fucking huge gorillas were owning everyone and repeatedly jumped on the foot (by accident). My foot was hurting and I could take any more pain so after another song I surfed over the barrier and got it checked out. I have to kep it elevated above my heart and therefore missed the last day of bands (not too bad though).

The thing that really pissed me off is that I lost my shoe, if anyone was at Leeds I was the guy constantly crowd surfing and pitting in a flouresent jacket with party written on my back and if anyone knows where my shoe is I would like it back
