Curing Amazon Jungle Tobacco
    #10676278 -

(Please move to another forum if this is not the right place for this post)

I am working a lot with Mapacho, which is a form of tobacco that I purchase here in Peru, and is commonly used in Shamanic work in the Amazon.

It comes with the leaves tightly rolled in a cylinder, soaked in either cane alcohol or sometimes treated with honey, and then wrapped in bark. I usually cut it in front of my altar and then mix it with a number of other plants before smoking it or using it in ceremonies as offerings to fire, Pachamama or the rivers.

Does anyone else here have experience with Mapacho, or any ideas about how to dry/cure it to make it a bit more smooth to smoke and maybe give the flavors a time to meld a bit. Right now I have it in glass jars on my altar and open every day, but it seems too wet still after a month. Any ideas of how to dry it, how small batch tobacco is dried in other places, and how other folks cure tobacco?

Thank you for your help!

Mapacho, also known as Nicotiana Rustica, is something many of us grow and cure here including myself.

Mine I hung from a hanger and let cure until brown, this however seems to not have effected the harshness.

I've heard green leaf is nice, but I havent tried this myself.

What I`m working with is most deffinelty cured, as the leaves are guite dark brown, and then soaked/treated with honey to preserve it until it is sold.

Is there anything I can do to both remove as much of the preservative as possible and to mellow out the smoke?

Also, do you think N Rustica would grow at 11,000 feet? The community I live in works with this plant a ton and we would love to cultivate our own medicine.

Hmmmm I'm unsure of altitude requirements for it as I'm at sea level.

I don't know if there is much you can do to mellow out the smoke now that it has been cured.

And as far as removing the preservative, I can't say, my leaves have always come straight from the plant.

to properly cure it needs to be sweated a few weeks before being dried.
That would smooth it out if done right.
