Nicotiana rustica Drying and Curing.. How?
    #1824358 - 08/17/03 11:44 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Ive been searching the web for the best methods of home drying and curing. I have only found commercial preparation instructions that require curing bins ect..
Surely entheomation or nuero could help me on this one..

Any links would be appreciated.

I would also love to hear about some experiences with this plant.

I know nothing about curing, and maybe i might have some links, i'll have to check. But the only thing i really know about curing is those damn curing barns smell really good, and supposedly the leaves are picked before the plant flowers.

Lemme check on those links.

Natives would pick the flowers and save them. They are said to be the best smoke. They would dry them by roasting next to a fire. Also I have tried the leaves in various states of growth. I have tried green leaves but have found them to be harsh. My friend that has given me this plant says to leave the leafes until they start to yellow. When they are yellow the flavor is mellow and smooth. You dont have to cure them when they are yellow. I would suspect that you can cure the leaves just like you would pot. By placing them when almost dry in a paper bag rolled up nice and tight. Open it every day or so to ciculate the air. Also check the plant material for mold. You can rewet the leaves and re dry and re cure it to further break down the chloraphil and sugars in the leaves. You would do this a couple times until you have a suitable smoke that is agreable with your tastes.

yes I do. I have been growing it for the past two years and have been smoking it for the past three. To the Native americans this plant is a sacrament. The smoke is your voice being lifted to the great spirits ears. So with every bowl I like to say a little prayer for someone or some place. For example when I pass a jail I smoke a bowl for all the people in lock up wishing them strength and well being.

I dry mine in the dehydrator, but i've only started doinng that...the leaves stay green, so i doubt this is a good cure. I left them hanging in the air from a string, but those were yellow leaves.

I only tried it once. A square centimeter of the yellow leaf....thats it. Two or three tokes gave me an intense nicotine buzz for a few minutes, very pleasent, if not many times more potent than regular tobacco.

A farmer I met said to hand them from their stems upside down for 3 months.

Sorry for the noob question, but is nicotiana rustica a tobaco plant? I asume it is because of the similar nicotine name... but maybe it isent. What are the effects when smoked? Is it something that all people can enjoy occasionally , or just something that tobaco smokers enjoy....

Yep, it's the most potent of all tobacco species.

Today I popped the top of a rustica plant in my mouth just to see what all the stickey goodness was like on the flowers. I sort of licked the flower bud. I noticed a quick buzz off it. It also made my heart beat a lil more faster. Love that nicotine

Please tell me you didn't.... :shake:

You can DIE from eating it!...or even smoking it...not conductive to a long life, please do more research before consuming plants....

Some info for you...

TOBACCO
Nicotiana tabacum L.; (Nicotiana rustica ?)
Nightshade family (Solanaceae)

An herbaceous annual growing to 6 feet tall, covered with short, sticky hairs. The leaves are thin, 1 foot or more long. The flowers are rose, purplish-red, or white, 2 inches long, on stalks. Native to tropical America. Possibly a hybrid.

Cultivation and Propagation: Tobacco grows best in a rich, sandy loam. It is easily grown from seed. These should be started in flats of finely sifted soil indoors in the early spring. Because they are very small they should be mixed with sand and sown thinly on the surface of the soil, and lightly pressed in with a small, flat object. The flat should be watered only with a fine spray or perfusion from the bottom. When the seed has germinated move the flat to a sunny position. When the seedlings are large enough to handle they may be transplanted to small pots or moved directly to the garden if the weather is warm enough. The plants should be set out a foot apart in rows 3 feet apart. They should have a warm sunny location with plenty of water when the weather is hot and dry.

Flower buds should be picked off as they appear. This will increase the size and thickness of the leaves. A plant or two may be allowed to flower, because they are beautiful.

Tobacco is susceptible to many insect pests, fungi, and viral blights.

Tobacco is one of the worst soil depleters. After each season the soil in which it has been grown must be heavily fertilized.

Harvesting: The curing of tobacco is an expert business, and will not be covered here. Furthermore, this process greatly reduces its alkaloid content. For hallucinogenic purposes, the leaves should be dried quickly, preferably in the shade or indoors, and without the application of heat. Uncured tobacco is very potent -- the Indians who used it would often pass out after as little as one cigarette, and "communicate with the gods." This type of tobacco should be smoked with caution. The danger here is death from overdose rather than addiction. When used as a ritual narcotic it is not smoked often enough to result in addiction.

One cigarette!!!, and the uncured is much more potent...you really want to be chewing quids of this stuff?!

..i bet it made your heart beat faster... :nonono:

Hey thank you for the worning. I never chewed the flowers or quids. I just lightly licked the juices off of it. I do understand the potency of this spieces, I have been working with this sacrament for a few years now. But for all people just starting out be very careful with what you consume.
