Tobacco Cultivation
    #7979821 - 02/04/08 08:36 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I really enjoyed growing and curing tobacco last year...although I could have done a better job curing.

This year I'm going to make an interesting blend of American and World Tobaccos.

I'm going to have the following-

Three "Bonanza" Tobacco plants
Three "Kelly Burley" Tobacco plants
Three Turkish/Oriental-"Samsun" plants
One Perique Tobacco plant

I found a vendor in TN, that will ship plants at the begining of the growing season, so I don't have to grow from seed! Hooray!

Sweet,

I have about 70 plants in my backyard that are now rotting away.

They were from my mates grandpa who didnt know what they were, i am guessing that they are some sort of cigar/pipe tobacco like Monte Calm Brun, Broadleaf, Havana etc.

Never got around to putting the effort into making a proper humidor to cure it so i left some leaves in the window to age-cure. Its getting pretty tasty.

Here they are; quite a few months ago now:

You growing it for pipe/cig'ettes/cigars?

Those plants are tiny! They grew about 9ft tall and leaves grew big enough to cover my whole torso and im 6'4"!

Yeah, if you have a humidor i believe it takes a few months. If you are doing it like i am it can take years.

Reason for me not harvesting much of it.

I hate tobacco intensively, but only the product. The plant is awesome.

Oh yeah, its a wicked plant. But commercial tobacco is the scum of the world. Unfortunately scum that i am addicted to. Im cutting down though, down from half a pack a day to one smoke every couple days.

The plant is pretty cool, especially when it is in that stage. The plants smell freekin awesome.

I tried to grow rustica once, but it was indoors. It flowered way to early and the leaves weren't even as big as my hand. There was no nicotine content, either. I think it was because there weren't enough nutrients in the soil, and the pot was too small.

I'm in need of a sterile sporeprint, if anyone wants to do a trade for some seeds or something, or maybe just for free if you have a lot of them............. i'd really appreciate it :mushroom2:

Your supposed to cut off the flower buds as soon as the appear to increase leaf size.

Here's a rough draft of my cultivation/curing method-

Growing Tobacco-

Cut the flower buds off as the appear to increase leaf size.

??????????Any more growing tips??????????

Curing Tobacco-

As the leafs turn yellow pick them off, staring at the bottom and working your way up, until all the leafs are picked.

After picking each leaf, place it into a well ventilated outdoor hardwood chest, full of freshly cut cedar sticks. After the last leafs are harvest and placed into the chest, wait Seven weeks.

Once Seven weeks have passed, remove the leafs from the box and “Hand-tie” them, with natural rope. Spray the “Hand-tied” leafs with water and gently shake them out.

After the leafs are washed, hang the “Hand-tied” leafs next to small, smoky hardwood fire, to smoke for Seven hours.

Hang the leafs outdoors in an Area sheltered from the rain, for Seven days.

Cut the large central vein out of each leaf. Roll every Seven leaf halves into a bundle. Place the bundle into a wooden box with freshly chopped Vanilla pods.

Place the box into a bag, seal the bag and bury it for Seven weeks.

After Seven weeks dig the bags and box back up. Remove and discard the chopped Vanilla pods. The tobacco is now ready to smoke. Store in an air-tight glass jar.

Tips and suggestions are welcome!

A Virginia blend is usually used for rollies. About 4-6 months after planting seedlings is the best harvest time. Doesnt really matter.

I'm only planting a few plants. i heard its expansive to grow because the soil you use is basically trash after your done.

BTW AFOAF also growing a bunch of poppy (gigs about 30 plants), kratom (feeling good from that stuff as we speak), psychotria alba, lions tail, living rock, cat nip (for my neighbor), Ayahuasca, and some Psilocybe Atlantis. gunna be a gooood summer.

Mine grew extremely quick. About 3" a week. The best fertilizer you can use for tobacco is wood ash. Just sprinkle about 1 handful at the base of growing plants or half a handful at bottom of hole when planting.

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MORE THAN RECOMMENDED. THEY WILL GROW MUCH FASTER WITH LOTS OF WOOD ASH BUT THE LEAVES WILL TASTE LIKE SHIT IF YOU DO.

One small dose is all that is needed.

Here is a crappy grow log pic of the difference woodash can make:

The plants at the top had been growing for about 7 months and most were starting to die, probably because the soil around here is shit.. The bottom pic is 49 days after giving them woodash and planting some more seedlings.

Gee that was ages ago...
