Kickle said:If my high school class is any indication, quite a few girls get pregnant without wanting it. And while some of them may have wanted it, age and experience still play a large part in understanding the consequences of such a desire.

I understand the argument for sex ed, but I think it is overly idealistic to believe that at a young age children can be taught complex consequences without having to experience them for themselves.

I am not going to deny your personal experience and your own observations regarding some of the girls in your highschool, but I am also not going to generalize it.
I think that there's some things that absolutely need to be taken to consideration in the example you mentioned, such as:
- what percentage of the girls did get pregnant, of all the girls that were sexually active in your highschool?
- what region of the world was this taking place, as the number of teen girls getting pregnant without them wanting to varies in different continents, countries, states, cultures, etc.
- what was the level of instruction of those girls that got pregnant AND the level of instruction of their families, as opposed to the rest of the girls.
- why is it that they didn't use a contraceptive method (if they didn't, because in case you didn't know, a pregnancy can occur even if contraceptives are being used). This issue is very important IMO, and I hope you will agree with me, after you listen to my point. One could refuse to use contraceptives because of lack of sexual education (and this is mainly the fault of the family and the school, because if someone doesn't want their 16 year old daughter to have a baby, they will make sure they talk to her about the importance of condoms, birth control pills, sponges, diaphragms, etc., instead of prohibiting them to have sex ), because of their religion (which is also the fault of the family instead of the fault of underage sex), because they hoped they will be lucky and not get pregnant even without using protection, because of poverty, or because of other diverse sets of reasons. I think it is important to keep in mind that even a mature woman can get pregnant for ALL these reasons stated above, not only an underage chick. Why isn't the state trying to protect them too, by prohibiting them to have sex, since the purpose is to avoid all that pressure put on the mother and her family for whose help she WILL be asking, even if she is legal of age, but with little or no income? Should the law be in such a way that it should make sex illegal for all the people that can't afford raising a child?

You are saying that there's some complex consequences that an underage can't understand without having to experience for themselves, and yet I don't understand what these consequences might be. Isn't it a very similar way of reasoning to the one where parents lie to their kids that the stork has brought them into the world, instead of telling them that their mom and dad had sex and the mother got pregnant, and this is how they turned out to exist? It's not like a 3 year old posing that question will be able to get pregnant or get someone pregnant, so how could they understand the mechanics of pregnancy? Do you think that it is a good idea to lie to kids in this manner, in order to protect them from the "crude" reality?
Then why aren't parents lying to their kids about any other biological function of the body? For example, when a kid asks how is it that they poop, instead of being explained how digestion works, they could be told that the poop fairy puts poop in their buts while they sleep.

Quote:
How exactly do you explain, and assure comprehension of, the stress a pregnancy will place on a family?

Maybe instead of trying to tell them something along the lines: "Honey, don't have sex because you will get pregnant and mommy and daddy will have to support you both, and we really don't have any resources, and it will make us (your parents) be so upset", they should try telling them something like: "If you really want to have sex, make sure you will protect yourself from all the possible diseases and pregnancies, and here's a complete list will all the existing contraceptive methods, along with what they do. If you will get pregnant at an early age, without having the personal means and mind to raise a kid, you will probably have lots of stress to deal with, from cleaning out his poop to having to take all the time to raise it, which will mean that you won't be having almost any fee time for dating, going out with friends, and other things you enjoy doing. I am not going to raise your kid for you, or babysit night after night while you're out having fun, so think ten times before having unprotected sex."

Quote:
I see current laws working by placing responsibility on the shoulders of those who have  had the opportunity to acquire the experience and maturity to carry it.

And how exactly does an 18 year old become a responsible being, if until that age he was denied so much experience and information?

Quote:
If we simply believe the only responsibility we have is to teach children and then let them have their way, we're placing a great deal of responsibility onto the children themselves.

We can't place that responsibility on kids, because this would imply taking it from somewhere else, and giving it to them. This isn't the case, since the responsibility has always been theirs, since it is the result of their actions.
My opinion and understanding is that, the more someone is being protected from the results of their actions, the more they will grow unable to deal with themselves and with the surrounding reality.
From the way you're making it sound, it could be confused that I'm proposing that a parent should let their kids do whatever they want, without taking the time to teach them everything there is to know about whatever there might be, along with getting through to them regarding the positive and negative effects that could arise from their actions. Even if the child still chooses to do something that a parent advices not to do, they shouldn't be interdicted to do it, and instead they should be allowed to learn from their own action, with their own minds, unless, like I already stated, it would be a matter of life and death or something that could seriously and permanently harm the kid.
For example, if my 16 year old daughter would tell me she wants to have sex with someone who has HIV, and she would refuse to understand why this can be so dangerous even if they would use condoms, then I would take more drastic measures in order to stop her from fucking that person. I would however try to be as rational as possible, and not take desperate measures, as I would understand that it would only spite her more and that she would develop feelings of hostility towards me, partially or totally compromising any future communication between us.

Quote:
I mean, do you really want to place the responsibility of contraception onto underage girls and boys? Guys don't like condoms, and I'm pretty confident in saying that age will not matter in this regard. So the girls are either going to have to be uncharacteristically hard assed and make the guy wear one, or they're going to have to take on the responsibility of remembering to take the pill every day.

Taking a pill every day (or 21 days each month) is such a hassle!
Seriously, how is it any different that every task that anyone has to remember to do, on a regular basis? Even if the girl is forgetful, she can just make her cell phone ring every day at the same hour, to remind her about the pill.
I don't know, I didn't have any problem remembering to take my birth control pills, even when I was underage.

It is true that some of the people who were abused ended up as abusers, but this matter is far more complex (I don't want to get further in explanations as to why this is so, because I am not interested in taking the discussion in this direction, and because it is not the point and focus of the OP) than what you said.
Also, please keep in mind that I am not suggesting that child abuse should be legal, and that I'm only advocating free, mutually-consented sex between an underage person and another underage person or between an underage person and a mature person.

"mutually consented sex between an underage and another underage or between an underage and a mature person. "

How do we decide when their consent is valid?  I made the baby example to show that consent isn't always informed.  Are you saying we should educate all young (5-6) children and hope they listen and apply it well enough to decide for themselves?  Sounds impractical.

Even those joking about it in their responses - closet pedophiles - are gonna be smoked out but their 'humorous' responses (Freud's Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, 1905). What's up with this, or is your question a veiled inquiry into a personal childhood violation? Surely, questions like this don't arise from mild curiosity, given the scope of curiosity. PM response maybe?

The point that I am trying to make is that people have different rhythms of growth, and while some of them are mentally unprepared for sex even in their 20's or till the day they die, others are ready at very young ages.
Another point I am trying to make is that, in some cases, the reason why people have so many hang-ups about sex is because their parents, schools, and other people from their environment have an unhealthy attitude about sex, attitude which is transmitted to their kids. The fact that some kids' parents don't talk to them about sex until they turn 18, and the little accidental information they get from their parents regarding this subject is a restrictive one, is responsible for them not being mentally ready for sex for so long.
As all learning, it takes time, repetitiveness, and reason. This is how one's mind becomes accustomed and relaxed about anything, and sex is not excluded from this list.
I am not suggesting that parents shouldn't be actively involved in their children's lives and guide them in any decision, and I am not saying that they should just not care about their underage kid wanting to have sex. I really don't think I made any out of line suggestions, and there's not a bit of guilt or any other negative feeling behind my claims, and I'm really surprised that you might think it is because some childhood violation I am trying to get in terms with. You are right about these question not arising from mild curiosity though.

The reason why I am asking all these questions (to other people and to myself) is because I have always been interested in childhood development and psychology, as I am of the thought that there's a big, unexplored potential in there that awaits discovery and exploration. The more I became interested in bettering myself, for no other reason than simply to be able to get more out of life, the more I realized that I had to explore my childhood in order to completely understand how I came to feel in a specific way about a specific something.
One of the things I noticed was how my sexuality and the views I had on sex from an early age have shaped me and influenced actions that aren't only regarding sex, but any other aspect of my life down to the animals I choose to have as pets or food that I like or dislike. Another thing that caught my interest was how my feelings on sex were changing in time, and how much or little of these changes were influenced by the education I got, and why.
My mother was mostly a very sexually repressed woman, and this was visible to me ever since I was very young, from the way she chose to approach me and answer my questions, from the social status she was striving for, from the way she behaved around my father and later with her second husband, etc. I found it disturbing and stupid that she thought it would help me to tell me how, in her experience, all the men in her life were treating her wrong, and that I should never trust men; at the same time I am very grateful that I never really took her advice. One of the reasons why I had the ability to recognize, at least at a very low level in the beginning, that she was coming from an irrational and emotionally negative state of mind, was because I was already in touch with my sexuality and the fact that my experience with boys was not the one she was mentioning.
When I think how much suffering I would have subjected myself to if I were actually to listen to when she had to say about life, it's only natural that I'll start thinking how my own curiosity regarding sex has helped me and motivated me to become informed about.
I didn't suffer any major trauma of any kind in my life, and I was able to cope with all the rougher experiences mostly due to the fact that instead of repressing all the negative feelings, I chose to explore them and understand why they happened.
When I was 16 I started dating someone who was 30 and we had been together for three years. I don't feel like I have been taken advantage of in any way, and I am still really good friends with that person.

I hope this will answer your questions and that I made myself understood enough about the reason why I opened this topic.

Yes, you answered quite candidly and I appreciate that because you interpreted my mode of inquiry honestly  :bow2:. As I suspected, you may have believed yourself sufficiently mature to be 'dating' a 30 year old when you were 16, but I am confident that as you get a few more years under your belt, you'll not only re-evaluate your present position, but you will consequently become much more conservative about other teenage girls 'dating' 30+ year old men. I've had 14-16 year old girls come on to me when I was in my early 30s from my position in junior high schools. They were not virgins, and they thought of themselves as sexual beings. They were also becoming so inflated with their youthful beauty and growing desire that they felt that my age and my marital status and my position as counselor (with its ethical/legal implications) were no obstacle at all to them. MY position was to understand their development, as well as being reflective and analytical enough to understand my own 'counter-transference' (my attraction to them). I acted with full knowledge of both of us, not to mention with the knowledge of the legal consequences to ME! I encountered some of these girls years later when I was legally able to date them - one asked me to take her to dinner, and I STILL think about HER sometimes :fonda:).

Hell's bells, a 37 year old former acquaintance of mine got a 35 year sentence (of which he did about 9) for having sex with a precocious 14 year old, who took multiple buses to get to HIS house. The law doesn't look kindly at grown men banging school girls, 14, 15, 16, 17, or 18 - til they're out of school. These are the mores of our society, but like other age constraints, there are real developmental reasons why not to take advantage of underage girls because it DOES ill-effect adolescent development. Sexuality should not overshadow moral development. A 30 year old, anywhere in the USA knows good and well that he is considered to be a sexual predator, and is considered to be a felon as soon as he is apprehended. AND if someone is willing to take that risk, they are reckless at best and crazy on top of being a potential felon with no real future in this society once caught. Teenage girls can't be convinced that they're dealing with a criminal mind, because to them, it's all about love and sex and romance and beauty, etc. It's not about right v. wrong, consequences, or the implications of his character.

I thought an age 18 drinking law was great when I was 18, but that caused so many deaths that it's good that it was repealed. There is a lot of difference beteen 18 and 21. There is no mystery why age 25 is the year that one can get affordable automobile insurance here - that's when the brain really attains adult development. Males remove the flame decals and resonators from their car's exhaust system, and stop driving obnoxiously (for the most part) by 25. Granted, many males never grow up, just get older. Girls also go through their "gone wild" phase, hopefully before doing any real damage. It's easy to feed an 18 year old girl's ego, but a 16 year old? They feel so-o-o grown up and womanly with the right words, looks and affect, if they are attracted to an older man. It's a real crime to go there - literally!

No, it is only rape if there isn't consent.

:sorry:, humans are sexual beings. They have sex, experience sex, and it is a central facet of their existence and nature.
Trying to belittle it as saying we are "cerebral" beings who can merely reproduce is nothing but denial.

Maybe they realize that they shouldn't care in the slightest about "a criminal mind" because they realize fully well that its interdicted and, furthermore, that it is complete bullshit when they are enjoying the time they are having exploring their sexuality. Beyond the moronic judgment of others, it really is about love, sex, romance, beauty, and the fun of discovering their sexuality when their body is urging them to do so.

I think it is troubling to have a perspective that it is somehow wrong for girls to be interested in exploring their sexuality and to do it with older people, or for older people to do it if they are treating the girls well and it is based in mutual pleasure. I definitely think that most "development issues" are arising from nothing more than the piss-poor and adequate understanding of human sexuality and how that is passed along to children.
I guess that is what we get for having had such a soon-to-be artifact as religion around for so long. :nut:

Ideally it would be a joint decision with the parents, younger partner and older partner.

I mean the parents, in a healthy relationship to their child would be invaluable in this area. Unfortunately few parents are emotionally mature enough for this.

Maybe on second thought humans shouldn't have sex with each other at all.

Re: Jailbait! [Re: fireworks_god]

I disagree with you on every point, and I don't even have kids. Moral development in terms of a selfishness-selflessness continuum is not merely a social construct, and it is not concommitant to religion. Social mores are not necessarily arbitrary, and the logical ones are grounded on deeper psychological processes that are psychophysically invariant for the most part. That means that they emerge from deeper in the psyche than the social sphere of "piss-poor" parenting. The social mores are a secondary interpretation of those psychological issues. Not being allowed to look at one's mother's face after puberty may belong to certain tribal societies as their unique way of handling the incest taboo. In the USA, pubescent heterosexual boys just squirm away from mom's embrace ("Oh Mom, leave me alone!") because of their discomfort with the same psychosexual issue.

Religion - and clearly you have your own deeply emotional issues pertaining to this sphere - has had a repressive and stultifying effect on human sexuality, is true. It is also true that organized religions are even further removed from the underlying psychological processes than mere secular social conventions. This goes so far as to have separated 'soul' from 'body' because of literal [mis]understandings of spiritual writings, or from perverse spiritual writings. I mean, the bulk of New Testament writ is attributed to Paul, and several book have obviously been written by other authors using the name Paul, or if not, Paul had multiple personality disorder. Paul is either egalitarian towards women, or a hostile misogynist. Most people can't discern the difference, and the misogynistic 'Paul' has created much of the difficulty in Christianity's devaluing of sexuality. I am convinced that many ascetical, body-hating, so-called 'Church Fathers' were self-loathing homosexuals who projected their self-loathing onto others, with particular vehemence against women (each woman being the seductress Eve incarnate added to their own misogyny).

But, why pick on Christianity alone? There is patriarchal oppression of women that predates Judaism and goes back to the point where humankind emerged from its Matriarchal, agrarian roots and entered its Patriarchal phase as hunters and aggressive war-makers. Organized religions inherited this trend from much earlier Neolithic stage of human development on a global scale. Religions do not hold a monopoly on the oppression of women and hence of sexuality, so there is no need to be unduly critical of religions for this reason, just because some nun rapped your knuckles too many times in vicarious retribution for her oppression.

In other times young people married and had children and were grown up much earlier then 18. Then humanity started to dumb down and become emotionally mature later and later. But of course sexuality doesn't wait for us to catch up emotionally. Let's face it kids have sex before their 18 all the time. Older men are attracted you younger women all the time. It's life happening and it's all messy like.

Of course in this country if you wait until a girl is 18 she will likely be obese and have diabetes.

Not in Miami. Of course, one of my counsellees this past year 'sprouted' out and up, and at the advanced age of 11, having been hit on by older 12-14 year olds, she decided to 'go down' on an 8th grade boy in a stairwell where she thought the cameras wouldn't catch her. Security caught the action from the neck down, but I suppose her absence from class plus her hair, back and butt was all sufficient to identify who was giving the BJ :blowme: .
This girl has no boundaries and she needs to be backed off to a reasonable distance, else she'd be rubbing up against me. This is not good for someone in my line of work. :nono:

Year before last, a 7th grade girl went down on a boy outside the school building while he caught the video action on his cell. Then he proceeded to show it off. That turns out to be the felony dissemination of child pornography. Today's kids were born into a pornographic culture which is all about male fantasy and more oppression of the feminine on a global scale (despite the money and fame of porn stars, they are not perpetuating full sexuality just genitality - for money). In the 60s, we were lucky to get 50s 16 mm silent films of guys wearing sunglasses and black Banlon socks, which broke constantly and had to be Scotch-taped together. Maybe we were better off. As it turned out, free love was not free at all, and promiscuity in both genders does not make for trustworthy partners later on in life.

Your argument lacks any kind of logic, and your proof that I am wrong is non existent.  Your logic is that if a CHILD consents to sexual contact,It's OK . You can call me names and rant and rave, but nothing justifies an adult that molests a child.  I think that it is a good thing, that your views on this are a minority.

I thought if I broke up my response in segments, corresponding to each of your points, that it would be easy enough for you to have a rational discussion about it.

Let's make it even more simple. First, you can tell us the names of the societies you referred to that reached a chaotic end because of an overindulgence in sex. :tongue2:

After that, then maybe you can tell us what pertinence molestation, rape, enslavement, and abuse have regarding statutory rape laws when they are already criminalized by their own merit.

We don't even need to go over your weak attempt to portray humans as not being sexual beings.

Moral development in terms of a selfishness-selflessness continuum is not merely a social construct, and it is not concommitant to religion.

Instead of alluding to "moral development" and asserting to MT that she "already knows why it is wrong", maybe you would care to make it a little more clear and explain exactly why it is immoral for an adult to have sex with another human being ages 8-16? There's no reason to refer to "selfish-selflessness continuums" when all we need for the purpose of the discussion is a demonstration how precisely it is actually immoral.

It can be asserted that they emerge deeper from within the psyche, yet this goes no farther than to suggest that humans are carrying around a lot of unresolved, emotional baggage when it comes to sexuality, not to mention a debate on how much of the psyche is resultant from environment and not instinctual tendencies.

Your example of boys squirming from being touched by their mother is an interesting one, and I think it definitely highlights, as you said, discomfort with a psychosexual matter. At the same time, this definitely couldn't be said to be the case with individuals who are raised in environments in which they are not given any reason to feel uncomfortable about the simple fact that they are a mammal that is easily stimulated in a sexual way from simply being touched or otherwise feeling a physical presence, regardless of who that presence is coming from. I could posit fully well that the discomfort is only their opportunity to become more aware of their sexual feelings and to begin to make decisions as to how they will form associations between these feelings and their behavior. For example, by realizing that even though it can sexually stimulate them, that there was no sexual intent, and that they do not need to feel conflicted by this.
Of course, that actually assumes that the squirming even has anything to do with sexuality at all, and not independence urges or avoiding ridicule from companions for being babied. Its important to really not try to over-analyze things that were only gross generalizations in the first place.
Furthermore, the fact that there are often examples in which people and societies have psychological issues arise regarding sex doesn't in any way suggest which is actually moral or immoral.

Religion - and clearly you have your own deeply emotional issues pertaining to this sphere

Your analytical skills are not too sharp if you've managed to deduce that from my observation that religion has been a handy mechanism for creating huge psychological issues regarding sex and that its presence on this planet is waning as people become more cognitive. The fact that you continued to insist on this with the reference to the nun-whoopings really makes me wonder why you're projecting this meaning, especially considering that I had only a passing involvement with any religion and that not one single aspect of it had any relevance to sexuality.
Is it too much to propose one's opinion on a matter without being accused of deeply emotional issues for it? I mean, unless you want to start citing my emotions as examples....

Quote:
There is patriarchal oppression of women that predates Judaism and goes back to the point where humankind emerged from its Matriarchal, agrarian roots and entered its Patriarchal phase as hunters and aggressive war-makers.

I know its more of a side note, but I don’t really feel it is accurate to represent the meaning you’re referring to as ”humankind’s phase”, as if it was a period of development akin to the progressment of just one human being, when it was actually a question of certain societies exterminating and subjugating others. Hunter societies and warring societies based on agriculture and its subsequent opportunity for centralized government lived in certain environments alongside other environments in which so-called matriarchal ones lived. I think this helps support my point, as well, when one considers that the deep issues arising from the psyche could be founded in the very examples you give now which happened so long ago, not to mention how vastly different sexuality and children has been conceived within the framework of morality in these different societies of different times and places.
