Harvesting Small Lophophora buttons
    #10603882 -

Hello!
i do believe this is my first thread ive made on the shroomery. so today i finally received my lophophora 5 smaller buttons and one "mature" plant. i also have a few pereski for grafting. i had planned on grafting 3 of the smaller buttons to the pereski and let them get big but im curious if i re-replant the roots to such a small lophophora if it will continue to grow. its my understanding that as long as there is 'areoles' it will pup, and i havent seen a limit as to how much of it needs to be grafting to continue to grow. so why waste anything right? just cut it a little above the root and it should work correct? thanks for your help, and any tips for my cacti, grafting, keeping em alive  or anything else is greatly welcome as i am new to this and have only studied it for a couple months. also thanks for reading.

heres a pic of my quickly planted lophophora's in a 'miracle grow - cacti'/sand/pebble mix.

and my bridgesii which is doing fine

Welcome to The Shroomery, and The Ethnobotanical Garden!

Just a word on clarity, generally when people use "harvesting" on the topic of cacti, it implies the final consumption/extraction of mescaline.  It doesn't usually refer to cutting the cacti to be grafted.  I came into this topic with the mental image of someone trying to gobble up a bunch of lophophora seedlings, and cringed.

That being said, I really don't know what the lower limit for survival of post-graph root systems is.  Undoubtedly one of the people with more cacti expertise can answer for you.

that guy is part of my permanent collection that i hope to plant at a future house when my lifestyle is more stable and i wont have to move state to state every few years (comes with my job). i do put it outside in the morning when i know the weather is going to be decent. i have also been working on getting better lights in the room as well as leave him in the window during the day and have been working on a grow cabinet. how ever i did throw the roots of a bridgesii in a shaded area by my place and now theres a 6 inch pup so i decided to plant another fairly decent sized (26inches?) one in the area of it.

bottom line, i put it on the shelf for the photo shoot and to show off a piece of my book collection :crazy2:

Persks are best suited for seedlings IMO. You should use blue myrtle, stenocereus, or another appropriate columnar cactus. And if you've never grafted and live in a country were L williamsii are illegal, consider learning with something cheap and accessible first.

And yes cacti pup from areoles. That being said, even if you leave an areole or two. that doesn't guarantee anything. I seem to have mostly failures in that endeavor. And if you didn't know, it can take a good while for them to actually pup. I recall someone in here saying it took a year for one of those. Maybe they will see this.

How cold is it where you live? You should keep them outdoor all the time, unless its cold or raining. They will really become an ugly mess if you continue with your method.

Your soil looks good, and you need to be using a low N fert such as Cactus Plus. Home Depot carries it. You can find it there and on the net for around $5 a bottle. Good stuff.

And hey, welcome to the shroomery! This forum rocks btw :yesnod:

Hi there,

I've been growing peyote for about 20 years and while I  dont profess to be an expert I have some suggestions for you:

1. Plant your lophs individually just in case you overwater them, that way if they get rot you wont lose them all.
2. Use a Trichocereus (such as panachoi) species for grafting, your grafts will live longer on more robust root stock. Also tricocerus species are less likely to cause splitting or suffer from lack of watering.
3. For detailed information on grafting pm me and I'll send you information
4. Make sure you use clean equipment when you graft- see if you can get hold of some isopropyl acohol, use a clean old-fashioned style razor blade and afix the lophs with ladies stocking or use surgical tape.
5. Cover your grafted plants with plastic bags and keep in high humidity and fairly low light conditions for ay least a week after grafting.
6. Cut you lophophora well above the root line but below the sunken growth point.
7. Do not  water the root part of the loph until the top of the cut plant has dried/ calloused
8 Try with one plant for starters, when you see that it growing you can risk grafting the next.
9. Typically the root part of the loph will regrow, your smaller plants appears to be at least a year or two old, I have grafted plants as young as two three months without losing either part

Check out this link care of loph- it's not comprehensive but might be useful: http://www.crazycacti.co.uk/Table/Lophophora/menu-id-2.html

Lastly - consider not grafting at all- plants on their own roots are so much nicer!

Good luck.
