USA 2 Spain 0
    #10566450 -

Holy fucking shit.  Really, holy fucking shit they stopped Spain
Quote:
Notable streaks for Spain that ended: A FIFA-record 15 consecutive victories, 35-consecutive games unbeaten (tying Brazil's record) and 451 minutes with allowing a goal.

USA just barely slid in to the round and they beat the best side in the world (well, Europe).

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

I think we all know what will happen then.  Just like last time they will be running around the pitch checking the front of their shorts for stains.  Which has not one thing to do with the enormity of this win for the lads from the wrong side of the pond.  A GIANT win for USA footie that will never be forgotten.

It is safe to say the USA caused one of the biggest upsets in world football.

They did an incredible job to defend against the Spanish attack!

In spite of a totally bogus red card for a clean tackle.

Why not?  Spain hadn't been shutout since the 2008 Euro Championship Quarterfinals at least 15 games ago.

They had like 20+ scoring chances. "Bend but don't break" defense is bad no matter how you cut it. Thank god Tim Howard was on his game and we converted on our chances.

Not trying to diminish the win, but I think Spain outplayed us.

I wish my roommate wasn't a little girl, I'd like to be watching Wimbeldon and the Brazil game right now.

You can't argue with perfection.  As in they perfectly thwarted every scoring chance.  Howard, by the way, counts as part of the defense.

Right he counts as part of the defense, but he isn't THE defense.
It's awesome that they won, but you'd have to be a fool to think the US played a better game of soccer than Spain.

 when did you start talking like a limey fog-breathing Woollyback?
honestly never had you pegged as a fan of the game.

I wish these guys played tomorrow, too much time off can really cool off a team running
more on confidence than skill. That said, I think they'll give the Canarinho a much better game than last time.

couldnt watch the game but I followed it at work on matchtracker, it seemed like the US
played defense most of the game, but you cant argue with the efficiency of 2 goals on 2 shots on goal.

Onyewu is really starting to redeem himself and Altidore is looking like he could become a goal scorer.

About 20 years ago I had a Limey partner from Liverpool.  We met when he started coaching my over 30 team.  Ever since I tend to lapse in to that vernacular when discussing footie.  It just seems appropriate since I don't speak Spanish.  I love top level soccer.  Which does not include MLS.  At all.  Not even close.

I think they will be better.  Less awed and more cohesive.  The lineup is different as well.  We'll see.

Shell ball is not always a sign of being outplayed.  Sometimes it is a wise choice if the other team has vastly better speed and flashier skills.  Germany has made quite a strong mark playing that kind of suffocating ball and waiting for impatient mistakes.  It works in hockey, too.

Altidore may have played himself off of the Spanish League bench.  For a lot of American players it is very much about getting a chance in the face of a certain not unearned prejudice.  Every time something like this happens the real leagues get a little more open to Yank players.
