My ghetto glovebox version (with pix)

So alright..being a college student and on a tight budget, but wanting to do this as well as possible, me and bf decided to assemble our own "ghetto glove box".  Now, i'm not sure if anyone has done EXACTLY the same before..but i'll post my pics and describe how i did it in hopes it might help someone and i can get feedback :smile:  This is just a first try at making our own glovebox so i wouldn't recommend anyone trying it until i get results hehe ..nevertheless, i wanted to share:

Mats:

1. Rubbermaid storage bin (mine's not that big i guess more space would've been a tad better)
2. Cardboard box
3. Rubber gloves (sterilized)
4. Duct tape
5. Scissors/x-acto knife

Now we took the lid out of the bin and replaced it with a cardboard wall instead which we duct taped to the plastic making sure it was snug.  To solve the problem of putting the jars inside the box we made a small "hatch" by cutting a square in the cardboard but leaving one side uncut (so it creates a "flap").  Two other holes were made for the gloves.  The gloves were sanitized and placed through the holes, duct taping them at the end (where you slide in your hands..this part is facing the outside of course).  The other opening with it's little "door" is used to place the jars/alcohol/syringe inside the box.  You slide your hands inside the gloves when the supplies are inside and voila! 

If anyone has any feedback/constructive criticism to add to our design it is more than welcome!

Good work, but you don't really need the attached gloves. They're a pain in the ass to work with - simply make sure the holes are small enough to be closed off when your forearms are stuck in there and buy a pair of tyvek wrist sleeves.

Also, with that setup, you won't be able to flame sterilize your cultivation tools. Sticking an alcohol lamp in a glove box is a recipe for disaster.

But wait...Isn't flame sterilization done outside of the glovebox? At least with the tek im following the guy clearly flame sterilizes before putting anything in the box.  After this, he cleans the needle up with his 91% isopropyl swab and done!.. (Let's grow mushrooms vid..brf/verm cakes tek).  So now I'm confused again...
Oh and I'm not using an alcohol lamp because i don't have one yet..closest thing is a bic lighter which i've heard will work just fine..correct me anyone if i'm wrong plz..really dont wanna screw this up :eek:

You always do flame sterilization outside of the glove box, then quickly move the still red-hot needle or tool into the box to do your clean work. You never want an alcohol lamp, or any other flame for that matter, in a sealed up glove box. Alcohol fumes have nowhere to go and the whole thing can go off like a bomb. Do a search - it's happened to several members in the past and severe burns can result.

You can make an alcohol lamp out of a jar of baby food and some cotton, if you want to get ghetto with it. I bought mine from a Science Supply store online for about $4 and it works great. A lighter will work, but you'll have sooty needles and it becomes a major pain in the ass to flick with gloves on.

Also, you never want to wipe down a red-hot needle. It's been sterilized and the first few drops of solution will cool the needle down enough for your inoculant to pass through unharmed.

I just have holes cut in the side, no gloves or tape.

alcohol lap + glove box = Boom
I've seen thread on here where people try to sterilize inside the box after fumigating it with oust.. lol

Its not 91% IPA 70% IPA is what you want. 60-70% ipa is more effective than 90%.

Dont forget that ipa is a sanatiser. Watch the video closely and he wipes the needle after inoculating to wipe any verm/flour of the needle. Its not done to cool the needle. I dont even do that though, i just flame the needle before each jar without even wiping after inoculating.

I had to go back to the DVD and watch it, ive never noticed him wiping the needle with alcohol in the vid. i was about to say, um are you sure thats the right vid? lol


yes flame sterilising should be done outside. I think we need to stop calling it a glovebox box, its really a still air box. You dont need the gloves attached. its not a good idea to flame sterilise inside because you have an alcohol soaked paper towel in there.

oh..and the gloves just felt really "gatgety" to us (i do NOT know if that's even a real word hehe).  It's more of an added accessory and our way of reducing airflow..the gloves are actually pretty easy to deal with once you get used to it since they're so loose but yeah..i do get why they would be unecessary..just thought they looked cool :cool:

I wish you would stop telling people this.  It simply isn't true.  They both work just fine for this purpose.  As for the box, it looks like it will work fine.  I personally prefer a little more work area in mine.  My design is stupid simple.  I melted two arm holes in a 64 quart tub.  one in one short side, and one in one long side.  This allows me to work at a 'right angle' and I can reach everywhere inside. Thanks so much for your explanation.  The way you broke it down also made it pretty easy for me to get it right away.  I know about the space..it kinda sucks to work in a constricted environment but for now it's the best I could do..i WILL probably copycat your version because it does sound much more convenient not to mention comfortable.  Glad to hear the alcohol will work..didn't want to go run down to my CVS again..cashiers there are slooooowwwwww  :crazy2:

Personaly i think thats overkill if not OCD.

Flaming should be done before each jar to prevent cross contamination.  Maybe different for grain jars IDK but in pf tek jars you get stuff inside the needle for definate and simply alcohol wipe wont get whats in the needle.

All thats needed to work with a glovebox is

Wipe down with soapy water, or a mild bleach solution if you must but its not needed.

Transfer your stuff inside
Close up
Oust the air (i dont do it, but why not)
wait 10 minutes
put your gloves on
tyvek sleeves/long sleved shirt if your glvoes dont cover arms
Wipe well hands with IPA
Give injection site a wipe with IPA
Remove syringe from bag, shake well
Flame needle red hot
wait a few seconds and inject while still hot.

I save my IPA for wiping my gloved hands down, cleaning jars well that need to be opened and kept sterile, tools before flame sterilising (scalpel , inoc loops) and injection sites.

i dont use gloves, and sterilize inside with lighters. it works better.

and i never spray any aerosol into my gb. just a alcohol wipe and bleach spray.

Guess everyone goes about it their own way eh?..I'll just be a bit OCD while i get the ropes of this and then I imagine i'll figure out along the way what steps to keep/skip (if any) in my sanitizing process.

youll start slacking in your own ways and keep only the necessary steps..

whatever you do always use a glovebox.
