FIRE IN THE GLOVEBOX!!! w/ pix

These images show a HEPA filter with burns from a flash fire in a glovebox. Fire Marshall Bill says: 'Alcohol fumes and flame; A very deadly combination!!!'
It seems that the filter wasn't on and there was no air flow to evaporate the alcohol fumes... The lighter was sparked to sterilize a syringe
Frickin' WOOOOSH!!!!!
The filter was totally white 10 seconds ago

The plastic gloves also melted instantly. Almost had an arm shrink wrapped!!

The skidmark on the floor almost matches the one in the undies.

Luckily no one was hurt. Remember Fire Marshall Bill's warning kids.

That's why I recommend NO flammable components in a glove box. I won't even use lysol in mine. The heat alone from an alcohol lamp is bad enough. In fact, I keep my alcohol lamp on the outside of the box and remove my hands to flame scalpels, inoculating loops, etc. If the blower had been on, you could have blown yourself into the next county from the extra air that would have fed the explosion. I also recommend against any sort of fan or filter in a glovebox. So called positive pressure gloveboxes are not used by most experienced growers. We all tried them when we were first starting out, but soon realized they cause more contamination from the turbulence they create than they help. Still air gloveboxes are what the pros use when they're not using a laminar flow hood. RR

I had a friend that would pour isopropyl alcohol on the bottom of his (non-laminar) flow hood and just light it on fire to sterilize it. The whole hood would be ablaze for 10 secs or so.
Isopropyl burns pretty cool and it was a tough hood, so it never caused any problems. Pretty stupid though.

Luckily it wasn't me doing it. It was a flowhood I built though so I was none too happy about it. I told him not to do it that way, but he wouldn't listen.

An experienced cultivator, I know. Uses a Bacticinerator in a STILL air glove box. Which generates around 1200 degree's in it's heat chamber.
He uses it to sterilize agar isolate transfer tools. While in use, nothing flammable, or volatile is in the glove box.
Other times, he uses alcohol as a sanitizer. When doing so, NO IGNITION source is in the glove box.
Ignition sources, and flammable liquids, in confined spaces.
LEAD TO EXPLOSIONS.
Be SAFE, rather than SORRY.

Last time I inoculated some jars I lit my arms on fire in a glove box.I learned my lesson fast and will never EVER make the same mistake again,You are allot more lucky than I am as I did actually burn myself pretty badly in a few spots,I probably only lit up for a second or two but man even a second or two seems like a long time when your hands and forearms are engulfed in flames. Its my own fault for giving a spray of oust in there and than apparently not waiting enough time to light my alcohol lamp.Funny though those are the only jars I even knocked up that didn't contaminate on me From now on just a quick wipe down and I'm never spraying anything in there.Good luck everyone and be careful

The fan is real low-flow CFMwise...and it's main job is to evaporate the alcohol fumes.
I thought the HEPA might be contamed so I didn't turn it on.
I'm thinking about using the GB as a still air box- as per RR - but in the back of my mind, I keep thinking I need to use a disinfectant...
stay safe y'all

This is semi-on topic but:
How long should you wait for oust to settle before you do something with a flame in the room?
It kind of worries me because you can always kind of smell it and I wonder if there's any remnants in the air that may make my room like the glovebox in the photo

It does now...

It made common sense then, but when someone is wrapped up into over-sterilizing everything; common sense just flies out the window.
