Farts. (thppppppt)
    #10494837 -

I realize that farts are the product of microorganisms releasing gases and whatnot but why do they come out so loud and plentiful?  You'd think that the air would be released as they create the gas, but it seems like it builds up to a certain fart capacity then allows you to let one rip.  Any scientific info behind this?

Farts are hilarious.

Scientifically speaking, that is.

I'd assume that your anus remains shut tight as to not release any stool, once the gas increases to a noticeable discomfort level your body wants to release it, like taking a dump.  (The year or so of practice you got as an infant should have taught you how to differentiate a fart and a shit.)  As the gas exits your anus the noise is caused by the flapping of your ass cheeks and/or other things that get in the way of the gas as you force it out.

Your stomach rumbling is kind of like a fart that never leaves your body, at least to my understanding.

But of course I'm pulling this all out of my ass so it could be wrong.

That's a good description but there's something I still don't understand.  I can see how the sphincter would cut off any pressure against it (as to not shit one's self) but the microogransims release such tiny amounts of air that it would seem almost negligible in the body's registry.  Why don't the tiny gas globs just seep out?  Our bodies seem to just 'collect' it, then let us release it in one big blast.

I'm not complaining, I love a good fart, but it just doesn't make logical sense to me.

the process of digestion breaks long chains of carbon based molecules, such as sugar, down into energy.  the building blocks of these sugars are single carbon molecules surrounded by 4 hydrogen molecules, which is the compound methane.  methane is a gas at room temperature, and is the principal component of your farts.  when you consider that sucrose (sugar) is made up of two glucose units (each made up of 6 carbons) and that a gram of sucrose would contain roughly 1 mole (6.022 x 10^23 ... really big number) it is not hard to see that the amount of gas created actually becomes quite a lot (around 1/2 a liter).

disclaimer: all math above is pure approximation ~ I am not about to waste my chemistry degree by spending more than 2 minutes musing upon the exact mathematical amount of methane gas that a gram of sugar produces when inside you.  feel free to perform calculations on your own...

I've heard rabbits can't fart and will die if their body builds up enough gas.

The sounds is comparable to letting the air out of a balloon. Think of it as your butt cheeks and/or anus clapping together really fast.

That's all I got for ya

I guess I should just embrace my ability to fart and not question it.   One thing I don't like though is my inability to smell my own.  I can smell the supreme rank ass ones, but the majority go unnoticed by me, but others are gagging.  I consider that a handicap.  I should get my own parking space for that shit.  :frown:

You also have to consider the huge amounts of bacteria that are found in the large intestine. Some of them are sulfur fixing, some can break down things other than sugars.

Man I wish I had that book on gross things that I got at the Discovery store as a kid. I'd tell you all about farts, vomit, diarrhea, etc. Holy shit I just found it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Grossology-Sylvia-Branzei/dp/020140964X

I'm gonna order that thing and put it in my bathroom. That way you can read about shit while you shit. BRILLIANT!
