Re: Dating someone on antidepressants [Re: MushroomTrip]

I've never been on your side of the picture, but I ended up breaking up with my girlfriend from my own depression after being in the longest relationship of my life.

I agree with those who say there may be an alternative to anti-depressants, but I don't have any experience with it myself.

I'm off mine now, they tended to kill my creativity for some reason. Mind-altering chemicals were understandably a tricky thing, to say the least, while I was on them as well.

A healthy person who has been eating the proper foods and exercising, living as humans should will never get depression.  It is only in our fucked up society where people can no longer live naturally, and have many problems because of it.

The problem is as you already said people cannot necessarily "live as humans should" in our society today.  Some people are not necessarily built to function in our society, from a neurobiological standpoint.  This is why you have a nation full of kids on prescription amphetamines because they cant sit in one 2ft x 2ft square and remain silent for 6 hours a day.

What's the answer?  Turn on, tune in, drop out, or however that old hippie shit goes?(not to offend anyone here)  Some people are going to need either medication or a shitload of psychotherapy to allow them to function in this society.  Keep in mind that everyone does not live in the same reality.  Your perception is dictated to a great extent by your biochemistry.

Drugs do help people.  Period.  Let's not get all Tom Cruise and tell people to flush their medicine down the toilet and start taking extra vitamins instead.

That being said, having an outlet for my energy and exercising daily does make me feel drastically different.  That is in addition to supplements/meds I use as needed to help me function in a society I am not wired for.

My thought is that, if you really care about this girl, your interactions during sobriety should be king to interactions on any drug ever.  I mean, you don't really want to base your relationship in recreational drug use, do you?

Its not that i don't love her sober. But going back onto antidepressants is long term. That means long term i cannot connect with a female on both a spiritual and sexual level. Both is whats important. And its not always that i want this connection, its sometimes, but on antidepressants it would be never (never feels like i'm really missing out on something because of the relationship).

Excuse me, but saying that you can "spiritually" connect with someone only on drugs sounds really stupid to me.
It is very true that people can create more complex relations while on drugs, but once the idea is there, the same thing can be continued sober. I honestly think that you're just looking for a girl to take drugs with and you're trying to make it sound nicer this way. There's no reason to stay with someone unless you want to, and it's obvious that she can't, at this moment, go without anti-depressants. We can discuss for ages if anti-depressants are good or bad, but this won't change her mind and her needs.

I think everybody that has posted here have stated their opinion about anti-depressants, but I really don't see how this is going to change your situation with her. Did you even get to suggest to her to go to a therapist and maybe include some ecstasy sessions? The one who should take the decision is her, but you can talk to her about all the other alternatives.

She can just look for a therapist that will tolerate this, and that will also be able to guide her in the right way.
But yeah, if you want to break up with her, nobody's really entitled to judge you just because it's your life and not theirs.

If she gets back on anti-depressants and you can't live with that, you can only be honest to her even if she will judge you. There's no reason to be in a relation that's not fulfilling, and it's also not honest to her.
