Eat until you can't possibly eat anymore
Then call that halfway and keep on eating

But for serz
Just eat natural foods, and do it in moderation.
Don't go all monk style though, be sure to treat yourself once in a while.

pretty much if it came directly from the earth and/or you prepared and cooked it yourself, it's good.  If it has more than say 5 ingredients stay away from it.

Milk is not so great. Its not the perfect food like everyone tries to make you believe, it just has some calcium and alot of pus, and thats the troof. Try looking at the food pyramid.

Bread(ORGANIC!!), cereal(no sugar or High fructose corn syrup), rice, pasta

Fruits and vegetables

Meat, Fish, eggs, cheese, milk

Psychedelic mushrooms

if it seems unhealthy it probably is.  if it doesn't seem unhealthy there is a high probability that it is.  If you know it is healthy then you're fine.

Check out raw foods. Obviously you don't need to follow any strict diet they might suggest on the website, but it does have some good healthy choices.

I can help you out! I know something about healthy food from my college classes I've taken.

The DON'Ts

First, don't eat processed foods. That includes anything that's pre-packed or can, like those TV-dinners and canned chili. The best thing to eat is food you prepare yourself using fresh produce. Processed foods are bad because they don't have very many nutrients and are usually loaded with Saturated fat, which is OK in small doses, but these foods have lots of it (which is NOT good). Also, these are the only foods which have Trans fat, which is bad for you in any quantity! Fresh foods don't have this, which is why they are healthy. Of course, most foods at the store our processed. So, as a general rule, if the processed food has more than 6 ingredients under the "INGREDIENTS" lists OR one of those names on that list you don't understand, its probably not healthy for you.

Second, don't eat fast-food! Fast food is processed food, which as I mentioned above, has high levels of Trans fat and Saturated fat;. This is how fat people get fat.

Third, try to not eat red meats like steak or fatty meats, like pork frequently. I'll admit, steak and pork tastes AMAZING. But I only eat it sometimes because they are NOT good for the health in large quantities. Cow meat is not good all the time because its hard on the digestive system and has lots of cholesterol (found in ALL animal products), which is not good to eat in large quantities. And pork has A LOT of cholesterol and harmful amounts of saturated fat (which is probably why it tastes so good!). Sausage is probably the worst because its processed AND its made of pork, which doesn't have many healthy nutrients about it.

Forth, DON'T eat foods HIGH in Saturated fat, Trans fat (should be near 0 grams), cholesterol or sodium. This is really just an summary of everything above. If you follow these rules by looking at the back of foods with the "Nutrition Panel", you will be on your way to eating healthy life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The DO's
First, make/eat foods that are made from fresh produce. Like I wrote in the first piece of advice, you can't go wrong eating fresh-produce based foods. It has all the good nutrients like healthy fats, minerals, and vitamins. Of course, you don't have to be a vegetarian to be healthy (I sure hell will never be!). A lot of different fishes like salmon have lots of healthy fats and nutrients in them. And, of course, its OK to eat steak, chicken, pork, lamb, etc. once in a while, just not in excessive.
Second, eat whole or multi-grain foods. Any bread or pasta that is made from many grains (multi-grain) or whole grain (whole wheat, for example). Actually, most of calorie intake should consists of these "whole grain" foods. That will really up the healthiness of your diet, I promise that!
Third, eat organic foods. I know, I'm siding with those damn hippies (!), but they got it right with this one. Some fruits and vegetables are genetically-modified or engineered (Called "GM" foods) to be resistant to pesticides/herbicides and insects, but these genetic changes at the DNA level of these plants has NOT be researched and the long-term health consequences are NOT UNDERSTOOD. Safer to go organic and be called a hippie than eat a human-modified produce product that could be unhealthy in the long-term.
Forth, keep your diet diverse. The body and stomach like a diverse diet, with different foods everyday. If you eat the same foods everyday, you won't get all the nutrients you need everyday. Also, you likely have experienced this when you eat the same thing everyday 9like the same breakfast), and you grow a dislike for it over time. This happened to me with tacos, which I used to make every other night for a year. Now, I don't even make them. Remember, like a very liberal student, your body likes diversity. So mix it up and surprize your body with a new food once-in-a-while or better, all the time.
I think that's it!
Enjoy your new lifestyle,
You really just have to eat plenty of fruits and veggies.  It's too hard to stay away from processed foods completely.  Just don't go overboard with them (keep carbs at no more than about 50g per meal).  They tend to be highly glycemic so always eat protein and fat with them to slow down the absorption.
Red meat isn't bad, it's the saturated fat that is the problem so just make sure it's lean.
But really, the bottom line is to load up on fruits and veggies.  There are so many phytochemicals in them that prevent cancer,  eliminate radicals, regulate blood pressure, stimulate immune response, inhibit swelling, et cetera.
Try to consume a variety of deep/dark pigmented produce.  Deep/dark color means lots of phytochemicals and there are different phytochemicals in different colors.
Another must is legumes(beans).  They are packed with protein and low GI carbs.  They also contain a lot of soluble fiber which feeds the bacteria in your gut (that's what causes gas).  But, trust me... you WANT to feed the bacteria as it accounts for a big portion of your immune defense and keeps your colon healthy.  If you eat plenty of produce you'll also be getting plenty of insoluble fiber which is a must for a healthy colon as well.  People who don't usually end up with diverticulosis.
Great post, you covered the basic principals well.
I'd also add that a lot of breads and such that say whole wheat also add bleached flour to it, so if you're going to go the whole wheat route, look for breads that say 100% whole wheat.
Learning to cook and being fairly good at it helps alot, the desire to eat healthy is greatly dimished if you can't prepare any of the meals for yourself.
Cooking is teh shiz when you get alright at it.
I guess I never realized that some whole wheat breads come as a blend with bleach flour.
Again, another thing to never make assumptions about: whole wheat bread.
Replying to stubborn:
The reason why I didn't recommend eating a lot of red meats like steak is because eating lots of red meats is correlated with colon cancer. In other words, foods like steaks are hard on the digestive tract and can cause problems in the Long Intestines and colon. Of course, this only happens in extreme cases like when a person eats red meat at every meal, but its still better to limit your consumption of meat. The Atkin's diet is totally bogus in terms of "improving health", but works in losing weigh. But its at the cost of clogged arteries, heart attacks and possible colon cancer. Ridiculous diet really.
And most of your calories should come from carbohydrates, I mean, that's what the brain runs on! And you need that to function! Of course, since your exercising, its necessary that you eat protein to repair those worn muscles and make them nice and big, for the ladies...
I wanted to add one more thing that summarizes what Good Foods have:
...Lastly, the foods you eat should be HIGH in mono-unsaturated/poly-unsaturated fat, complex carbohydrates (NOT sugar, that's a simple carb), and vital vitamins/minerals. Like mentioned before, those foods should also be LOW in Saturated/Trans fat, sodium (table salt), cholesterol, and sugars.
And stubborn right: Any fruits/veggies that are brightly-colored (like bell-pepper for example) have LOTS of healthy vitamins/minerals like anti-oxidants which have shown to have anti-cancer properties! Which remindes me, hot peppers like Habanero's, are LOADED with these anti-cancer chemicals and they *very* good for the body. If you can handle the heat, eat some fresh, hot peppers. The hotter the pepper, the better its for your health.
Yup, fruit veg and whole grain. Lots of them. Green/peppermint teas.
Try and get some berries (esp. raspberries and blueberries, you can usually get cheap punnets at cheap supermarkets) everyday, and a serving of nuts (esp. almonds of hazelnuts). You can put them in your breakfast cereal, or make a smoothie.
My whole life I have eaten what I consider to be healthy eating but I'm sure people will knock me on here. First off Olive oil.. That is the staple of my diet probably haha and red wine.. I eat alot of fish.. Love talapia.... Always eat string beans, jersey tomatoes and white corn. I always eat a salad after my meal.... Alot of people eat salad first but my family we eat it last.... I don't eat much beef or chicken.. I eat alot of fish like I said earlier I usually have some kind of pork once a week and eat lamb too probably once a week. I eat pasta every night..... Not a dish full..... But always as a side.. Always eat gravy made from crushed tomatoes and basil and it's usually also cooked with meats and meatballs. I eat fruit constantly. Figs and dates are my number one fruits. Also oranges, grapes, pears, plums, raisins. Also I like the Jersey fresh blueberries, raspberries and blackberries.... I love cheeses and dry aged meats. soppressotta, salami, prosciutto, provolone, asaigo and even some American Cheddars.. Love squid, sardines, anchovies and octopus... Also love lobster and crabs.. I probably east a steak every 2 or 3 months. You just have to, it's the American way haha. Also all types of nuts.. Jersey sunflower seeds, pistachios, almonds, macadamia nuts.. Always have an espresso and usually on Sundays I'll eat a cannoli and a Sfogliatelle sometimes napoleons.... Hmm trying to think of what else.. I don't think fast food is bad really... I usually eat it once in a blue moon.... I like to get a taco and love a Whooper every once in awhile. But if you eat this more then once every couple months I could see how it could be unhealthy. I never drink soda.. Always just drink water. A small milk and a small Orange juice in the morning.. Always Always have a glass of red wine during dinner.. I've been doing that since I was about 10 haha.. I think as long as you exercise and eat balanced meals you can be healthy. Every once of my grandparents lived past 85.. My parents are on there way and I am a very healthy young man.. While I do think alot of it is genetics ( I have 2 great grandparents who liked past 95 one broke 100) I also believe eating rite plays a large role....
You could listent to Logical Chaos, yes, if you wanted to completely alter your diet and take on a new form of lifestyle... But you're not.  To eat healtheir you really don't need to do a lot of work.  Cut out soda, chips, etc, stuff you KNOW is not good for you (hint: HFCS, not healthy) and simply replace it with drinking a bottle of water, or some natural chips.  Counting calories is ridiculous.  Eat until you aren't hungry, and when you are hungry again, eat a little more.  You will be surprised at how much weight you can lose even though you're eating constantly all day.  Stay away from too many fruits as they're high in sugar (yes i know it isn't simple sugars, but still, a carb is a carb and too many are bad).  Don't eat obviously greasy foods, and load up on low fat dairy products.  Unless you're 50 too  much salt really isn't a problem if you're drinking a lot of water (did i mention drinking water is super beneficial??), so don't worry about that as much as you want to stay away from saturated fats and simple carbs.
How come carbs are so bad?? I eat pasta everynight. Also I eat fruit everyday. I do eat some type of meat everyday except Friday.. My whole family eats this way and are pretty healthy. Basically what I'm asking is why are carbs so bad and what is the benefit of cutting them out??
IMO the healthiest diet is one of raw fruits, veggies, and meats, and no grains or dairy.
Saturated fat and cholesterol are NOT bad for you, they are essential. It's cooking them that' s the problem. And it's also the fact that animals are fed grains, that makes the meat unhealthy. 100% grass fed meat is safe and healthy even in large quantities.
